Confused by the debate going on
over at HMS Blog on
the principles of the Just War Theory and whether attacking Iraq falls under
those principles? Do you just want to bomb Iraq but can’t seem to cut through
the confusion and morally justify it? A lesser know paragraph in the Summa
Theologica of St. Thomas Aquinas describes the Just Because War
Theory.
Objection 1. We don’t know if a new regime will in fact be
better than the current one in Iraq and could very possibly be
worse.
Objection 2. We have no support from Arab countries in the
region and a war could further disrupt this already unstable
region.
Objection 3. With no Arab support we don’t have a place to
stage troops for the three to four months it will take to stage
them.
Objection 4. Iraq’s funding of terrorism is probably no
worse than money funneled by Saudi Arabia and Iran and also China’s support
these nations through the sale of military hardware.
On the
contrary: Just because.
bigger military and just because Iraq rhymes with attack.
But seriously folks, I think Iraq has had its hands in previous terror attack
on US citizens and that we probably don’t know the full extent of it. But
whether the true threat that Iraq shows justifies a war is something that I am
not qualified to answer. As a retired Navy Chief I was involved in the Persian
Gulf before, the one day bombing raid on Libya, and the show of force by Haiti
so I have seen military force effectively used and totally misused.
