Does this guy honestly think the media should be referring to anyone as “soulless butchers” or “vermin?” I think I’d immediately throw away any paper using such emotive terms. Regardless of how obviously evil the terrorist’s acts appear.
Militant would be a reasonable term for someone who picks up arms and starts committing acts of violence, it’s just been devalued. See; militant, atheist, militant feminist, militant [insert something else the right doesn’t like… oh wait yeah environmentalist]
Stoo – His point is clearly outlined in the first several sentences; namely that the article in question does not use Islamist or Terrorist (or an appropriate combination of the two) which is indeed the case in these attacks in Mumbai. Instead the article MERELY calls them militants.
The point being that the article’s writer dances around and “plays nice.”
John C Wright is asking why is it that a more-left-leaning paper (or any organization of the political left) pussyfoots around instead of saying exactly what happened – that this was a terrorist attack committed by Islamic fundamentalists for no other reason than to commit acts of terror.

Oh sure it’s a fair point that this looks like clear terrorism. The linked item just makes the point really badly.
re: no other reason, i thought they were maybe linked to separatist movements in Kashmir?

Is Kashmiri separatism unconnected to Islamism? I expect the answer is no.

The fact is that the group that commited the Mumbai attacks had a fair sized cell in the USA that got busted. They were in Virginia. For those who aren’t too familiar with USA geography they were in the peidmont area very close to Washington D.C.our national capitol. They were labeled by the media as the paintball jihad because they were training for their planned operation by drilling in paintball parks. Not a bad idea for training. Any way the purpose of this organization in Pakistan and India is to eventualy form a caliphate out of India and Pakistan under Taliban style rule. I call them slime. because of their cold hearted murder. I am not so sensitive as many about calling slime what it is.
Tip to those who think that if they show such people respect they will earn some sort of respect back, think again! These people will not care if you talk kindly and cowtow to them. They will not be any more gentle when they slice off your head. Is that understood? They are here to kill and be killed. Such a concept may be foreign to some people but old soldiers like me know that some people are like that. They are thoroughly convinced of their philosophy and there is little to no chance that they will even give notice to any kindness and respect except to use it to further their brutality.
I’ve talked to a couple of these fellows and any logic and understanding that goes beyond what is needed to further Wahabist victory is lost on them. They take no notice.
I find it unsettling that Christians, especially Catholics are marked with a target by pop cuture yet honour is paid to a religion that wishes the destruction of pop cuture.
We need to view these people with the maturity required to understand that they are “Vermin”.
