LOS ANGELES(AP) – Three-fourths of the
country’s youngest Roman Catholic priests believe they are more conservative
than their older counterparts, according to a Los Angeles Times poll published
Monday.
A survey of 1,854 priests nationwide found that nearly
four in 10 priests under the age of 41 described themselves as conservative,
while 30 percent of all priests described themselves as liberal and 37 percent
as moderate.
The younger clerics expressed more allegiance to the
clerical hierarchy, less dissent against traditional church teachings and more
certainty about the sinfulness of homosexuality, abortion, artificial birth
control and other moral issues than their elders, the poll found. [Full
