PEORIA, ILL., June 29 (CNA/EWTN News) .- Bishop Daniel R. Jenky of Peoria says the declaration of Archbishop Fulton Sheen as “venerable” is wonderful news for both the diocese and the Catholic Church in America.
On June 28 the Pope Benedict XVI authorized the decree recognizing the heroic virtues of the much loved U.S. archbishop, author and television evangelist. The move brings Sheen closer to sainthood.
“Fulton Sheen’s zeal, wisdom, and holiness should help us build our faith,” Bishop Jenky said. He thanked God that the Catholic Church has recognized “a son from central Illinois.”
Archbishop Sheen was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Peoria and went on to become a prominent speaker and author. In addition to serving as an auxiliary bishop of New York and Bishop of Rochester, was best known for his weekly radio broadcast “The Catholic Hour” and his later weekly television program “Life is Worth Living.”
The archbishop died in 1979 at the age of 84. His cause for sainthood was opened in 2002.
Msgr. Stanley Deptula, executive director of the Archbishop Fulton John Sheen Foundation in Peoria, said the Catholic Church in America needs “heroes to inspire us to stand up and to fall to our knees.”
“I think in a special way, Venerable Fulton Sheen can be an inspiration and a consolation to our bishops and other Church leaders. He was a man of courage, and priest of prayer.”
In response to the decree, Bishop Jenky will celebrate a thanksgiving Mass on Sept. 9 at the Cathedral of St. Mary in Peoria.

Though I was also happy to see a story on Bishop Clark having to send in his retirement letter to the Pope. Bishop Clark is of course the Bishop of Rochester who actually has been there so long that the previous bishop was Archbishop Sheen.

We, the physicians and future physicians of the Religious Sisters of Mercy of Alma, Michigan, met on June 2, 2012, to articulate the vision of the call and contribution of religious women in the redemptive healing ministry of the Church. We also addressed statements issued by the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR), various news agencies, and other organizations which have created confusion, polarization, and false representations about the beliefs, activities, and priorities of a significant number of women religious in the United States.As religious women, our whole life is based in faith. Apart from faith, religious life has no meaning. The doctrinal assessment from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) regarding the LCWR is in the language of faith. The responses of opposition are being expressed using the language of politics. There is no basis for authentic dialogue between these two languages. The language of faith is rooted in Jesus Christ, His life and His mission, as well as the magisterial teaching of the Church. In addition, the language of faith does not contradict reason, but elevates it and secures its integrity. The language of politics arises from the social marketplace. The Sisters who use political language in their responses to the magisterial Church reflect the poverty of their education and formation in the faith.
The call to religious life, begun in Baptism, is lived through the practice of the evangelical counsels. A religious call is a gift from God, not a right. The charism of the religious community is given to enrich the Church, and its authenticity must be discerned by the hierarchy. A woman religious participates in the charism and cannot separate her work from the Church. As women religious physicians who uphold the teachings of the Church, we defend the dignity of each human person. This dignity is under attack, as evidenced by our government’s and social media’s use of the language of “women’s rights” to promote birth control, abortion and sterilization as benign health care services. This is a naïve position and demonstrates ignorance of the serious effects of these health care services on women’s physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual well-being.
The Incarnational significance of God becoming man brings to a point of convergence the suffering of mankind and the mercy of God in His redemptive mission. This convergence within the call of the woman religious physician unites the profession of medicine to the transcendental reality of faith, drawing patients and our physician-colleagues into the redemptive mystery of suffering. The redemptive power of Jesus was most tangibly revealed in His ministry to the sick, and by His words, He frequently related a miracle of physical healing to the more profound healing of the spiritual wounds inflicted by sin.
We praise the generosity and service of religious women who have gone before us. We see great hope for the future of religious life within the Church and for a continuation of its health care mission in the service of all people. This hope lies in remaining within the deposit of faith and the hierarchical structure of the Church. We cannot separate ourselves from sacred Tradition or claim to advance beyond the Church. There will be new expressions of the faith to meet the needs of this present day, but these will be contained within and directed by the Magisterium of the Church. As Saint Augustine exclaims, “O Beauty, ever ancient, ever new!”

Jimmy Akin shows just how historically inaccurate this charge is and totally lacking in foundation. It also goes to show just how common it has become to reference any deep friendship of same-sex friends as being homosexual in nature, for example the baseless charges against Blessed John Henry Newman. The Catholic Church gets accused of obsessing about sex while secularists reduce many things to sexual attraction as motive.
Jimmy Akin has also put together a link list concerning articles on John Boswell who was a historian and homosexual activist who is perhaps best known for writing the book Same-Sex Unions in Premodern Europe.
After all the blowup over the invitation of the virulently pro-abortion author of the right-destroying HHS mandate Kathleen Sebelius, the only defense the formerly Catholic and’ presently Jesuit Georgetown could muster is that the event that Sebelius will be speaking at is not a “commencement.”
Georgetown has even gone back and edited their original announcement in which they called it a commencement ceremony. Crisis over. Nothing to see here.
“Secretary Sebelius is not speaking at Georgetown’s commencement. She is speaking at Georgetown Public Policy Institute’s annual student and faculty awards event,” Georgetown spokesman Rachel Pugh said in an email to The Cardinal Newman Society.
They must think we are as stupid as they clearly are.
So, she is not speaking at a commencement. What is she speaking at?
As CNS reports, she is speaking at an event during commencement weekend in which graduates of the Georgetown Public Policy Institute will have their names called, they will walk across a stage, and receive their diplomas. She is speaking at the event in which all these things happen, but don’t call it a commencement.
What is it with these people that that they think that changing a word and denying the obvious changes the real nature of things. Kinda like calling a creature with 46 chromosomes, a heart, a brain, fingers and toes a fetus instead of a person magically makes all the horribleness go away.
What is wrong with these people?
