Shea links to the National Catholic
Register whose front page contains two stories on the Mandatum and academias
response to it. The loyalty oath required contains a major problem for
theologians, namely orthodoxy and obedience. What were they thinking? I have
edited the oath to be more in keeping with most theologians teaching
today.
The Oath of Infidelity
I, (name of dissenter), on assuming the office of false shepherd at
[Catholic in name only college], promise that I shall always preserve
communion with my understanding of the Catholic Church whether in the words I
speak or in the way I seem to act.
With great feeling and infidelity I shall carry out the responsibilities by
which I feel intellectually bound in relation to both the universal faithful and
to the particular faith community in which I am called to exercise my service
according to the requirements of my cognitive discernment.
In carrying out my charge, I shall preserve whatever part of Deposit of the
Faith meets my needs, hand it on filtered through my biases and make it seem
pedestrian. As a result, I shall shun whatsoever teachings are contrary to my
ill-formed conscience.
I shall follow and foster the common discipline of the magisterium of the
faithful and shall look after the observance of all politically correct
doctrines, especially those which are contained within the New York Times.
With Christian disobedience I shall disassociate myself with what is
expressed by the so-called holy shepherds as inauthentic doctors and teachers of
a patriarchal faith, or anything established by the male dominated structures in
Rome.
May my concept of God help me in this way.
