Fr. Bob Carr has recently been
posting about his reactions to the What Would Jesus Do (WWJD) puzzle. The
Israelites tried to do the WWYD question and they never came up with the right
answer. They never imagined the incarnational suffering-servant God that would
die for all. They asked themselves the WWYD question and determined that the the
Messiah would be a warrior king that would deliver them from the Romans. Peter
was the first to try the WWJD question when he asked the Lord “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive
him? As many as seven times?” — Matt 18:21 James and John asked
themselves the WWJD question and asked the Lord “Lord, do
you want us to bid fire come down from heaven and consume them?” –Luke 9:54
In both cases Jesus’ reply showed them how far off the mark they were to
what He desired. God is infinitely surprising in what he would do and in his
love for us.
