The Left Wing from the West Wing

Martin Sheen and a group of artists have started the organization Win
Without War.

Now I didn’t make the following up. On their site it says:

On February 26th, you can join a massive march on Washington without leaving
your living room. The Virtual March on Washington is a first-of-its-kind campaign
from the Win Without War coalition.

Marching without moving is consistent with their theme.

In their mission statement it says "We are patriotic Americans who share
the belief that Saddam Hussein cannot be allowed to possess weapons of mass
destruction." and "We can achieve the valid U.S. and UN objective
of disarming Saddam Hussein through legal diplomatic means.

Now if Hussein has WMDs you can do one of two things about it. Take them away
from him or let him keep them and try to offset their use through a superior
threat to him. A kind of Mutually Assured Destruction policy or maybe that they
will be assured of destruction policy. If he has WMDs then he has been lying
to the world and doing everything in his power to keep them from being found
by the weapons inspectors. Diplomatic action will avail nothing with this regime,
I don’t need to recap the plethora of UN resolutions ignored and violated. In
the history of the world what regime has voluntarily disarmed itself through
diplomatic action? Now I went to a public school, yet I am still pretty confident
that the answer to this question is no regime has done this. I think the idea
of letting the UN weapons inspectors do their job is absurd. They should be
more aptly called the "UN Document Inspectors." They could not have
found out about missing stockpiles through physical inspection, but rather by
comparing what one document from the Iraqi regimes says to another document
from the same regime. They waited for two months for the initial documents from
Iraq instead of going right in and starting inspections. After spending twenty
years in the Navy one of the most stupid things that we had to go through were
preannounced inspections. This always insured that when inspection time came
around everything was ship shape and ready to be looked at. Of course the rest
of the time it wasn’t. They did this so that they wouldn’t have to write negative
reports and everything could look better than it actually was. Unannounced inspections
or inspections with no time to prepare are the only type that can turn up actual
problems. If Iraq has WMDs and they couldn’t successfully hide them in two months
then they are totally inept.

So if they believe that a war with Iraq will cause more problems then it will
solve then they should be totally behind building up the military and ensuring
that the threat we can project will discourage them from ever using these weapons.
At least I wish they would stop hiding behind the belief that diplomacy works
with brutal thug dictators. One of the shirts I had from my days in the squadron
VA-115 said "Peace through fire control superiority."
