Parishioners at Saint Mary’s cathedral in downtown Austin could have worn hard hats on Sunday because mass was held in a construction zone.
Worshipers filled St. Mary’s cathedral Sunday despite ongoing restoration. It’s all part of the restoration project at St. Mary’s, where Catholic worshipers have sought spiritual guidance since 1874.
“We have many people who come to the cathedral to pray and seek solitude from the hustle and bustle of the city, and we want this to be a welcoming place where they can do so,” said Bud Rowland, cathedral director.
Church officials say restoring the cathedral’s original 19th century look will make it more inviting.
“We remember that the people who saved and sacrificed to build this cathedral lived right after the civil war, in a time and era in the south when there was not a lot of money, so they sacrificed to build this little church,” Rowland said.
