FRANKFORT, Ky. — After hearing from the grieving parents of a pregnant Scott County woman who was slain last week, the Senate Judiciary Committee yesterday approved a bill making it a crime to kill a fetus by killing or injuring the pregnant woman.
“My daughter was stolen from me along with my grandson,” said a tearful Carol Lyons, whose daughter Ashley Lyons, 18, was 22 weeks pregnant when she was found shot to death Jan. 7 in a car at Scott County Community Park.
Lyons testified alongside her husband, Buford Lyons, as they displayed a photo of the Scott County High School graduate. No one has been charged, and police continue to investigate.
Senate Bill 4, sponsored by Sen. Richard Roeding, R-Lakeside Park, would offer protection from conception on. The bill cleared the committee by an 8-1 vote with little debate, sending the measure to the Senate floor.
