Magnani, who is Catholic, said he struggled to reconcile his church leaders’ opposition to gay marriage with his duties as an elected official.
“I am a Catholic, with faith in my God and respect for my church. I am also a legislator, with faith in our constitution,” he said. “My role as a legislator, as I see it, is to seek the greatest good for the greatest number of people…while preserving the social order as prescribed in the constitution.”

It is all too easy to see the outcome of struggling to reconcile their faith with their politics. In Las Vegas where they will bet on anything, no one would take the bet on a Catholic politician wresting with their faith as to what will win. Unfortunately too many see a good as being equal to what pleases people. It would nice to see at least once a paragraph that starts as identifying someone as a Catholic politician with it ending with that actually meaning something.

I’ve been thinking about this question, but more from Bush’s claim that his faith influenced his decision about invading Iraq (instead of say, using his reasoning or compassion). Cognitive models show that relying on “faith” can lead to self-serving decisions, so how do you counter that risk?
Faith-based this and that in the news all over. And then the verse popped in my head.
“Faith, Hope and Love, and the greatest of these is Love.”
So, if your faith tells you to do it, but it does not show the Love, then do not do it. Seriously.
Like Mother Teresa allowing all those women to keep having children that suffer and die. Faith-based, not love-based. God is not an accountant with a quota for souls.
And god is not really pro-life either. Everyone dies. There is no limbo, either.
So, who makes life in the first place? Shouldn’t that one be the one in charge of the life-span?? Have you ever heard of eternal life? There is a book that talks quite a lot about it, called the bible. My favorite is the section called the New Testament.
You are right about acting in Love, looks to me to be very life giving, if it is not self love, but is acted on to help the other person.
