Here are Cardinal George’s remarks during his Ad Limina visit to the Pope. This is an excellent overview of the Church in America and I especially found this line dead on.
Culturally, the right to sexual freedom is now the basis of personal freedom.
As they say, read the whole thing.

this speech is just full of quotable gems. how do we get it published in our local paper?
True, true, true. The situation for evangelism is terrible now because of the Scandal especially. But also because of social and cultural ideas. Although it must be remembered that if they are bad here, they are 10 times worse in Europe, where the church buildings are concert halls and almost no one goes to Masses outside of religious tourist areas.
The remarks of Cdl George nailed our situation though.
But you know, I just saw an article where the Vatican wants to talk to our bishops re refusing Holy Communion to publicly professing dissidents running for office. If they undercut the only disciplines we have seen here for years, I hate to think what will happen. Many more people will certainly just drop out of the picture.
They’d better be careful or the US will end up looking religiously like Europe in a few generation (minus the fancy concert halls).
