Howard Dean speaking at Cornell:
"The difference between Democrats and Republicans is that the Democrats think that women should be able to make up their own mind about what kind of health care they have," Dean said on abortion rights. He argued that many women who perceived themselves to be pro-life were actually pro-choice: they believed abortion to be immoral but would not be willing to dictate what other women should do in those situations.
Dean also said that "Bush’s cronies" managed to pass anti-gay marriage legislation in 11 states during the last election in order to "scapegoat a minority for the purpose of getting elected and that’s not courage. That’s not leadership, and those people don’t belong running the United States of America."
So now Howard Dean is trying to frame pro-life voters as "personally opposed." It is bad enough when politicians use this dodge and to assign to this to pro-lifers just to make it seem that you are on the same side is even worse. This is of course why they love the phrase pro-choice because it can mean both anything and nothing at the same time.
The charge of "Bush’s cronies" passing anti-gay marriage legislation is just as silly, especially since a higher percentage of people voted for the gay marriage ban than voted for Bush. So I guess there must be a lot of "Bush’s cronies" that voted for John Kerry.

I didn’t read it that way. From the text quoted, I thought he was saying that women who were personally opposed but publicly supportive but who nevertheless considered themselves pro-life were really “pro-choice”. If that’s what he meant, he was correct. Otherwise Kerry would have counted as pro-life.
I read it as Dean’s ham-handed attempt to portray the DNC’s pro-choice policy as closer to the mainstream of the country.
It’s a nice little slip. Sooo many politicians like to ride the fence with P.O.B. or, as we call it in the biz, the Cuomo Dodge. He has blown it again by giving away the game. He told the world that the pro-aborts know perfectly well that it is a sophistical dodge, a position that only displays a person’s moral cowardice.
Thanks Howard!
It’s Hitler’s “Big Lie” theory: tell people what they really believe loud enough and long enough and they’ll come to believe what they’re being told.
“You might think you’re pro-life, but you’re really pro-choice.
You might think you’re pro-life, but you’re really pro-choice.
You might think you’re pro-life, but you’re really pro-choice….”
Repeat as necessary. Swinging a shiny object back and forth during the chant is also helpful….
