Via AMDG and Free Republic comes this story.
How fitting that as one of his final acts, Bishop Pilla appointed a liberal Pastor to St. Rose of Lima parish. The new pastor’s first official act was to end the Latin Mass at St. Rose effective May 14. Happy Mother’s Day! St. Rose curently has four Masses, but the Latin Mass draws more people than the other three combined and has a bigger collection than the other three combined. This only makes sense as a punitive act to punish some of his most outspoken critics.
Of course incoming Bishop Lennon could allow the indult Mass somewhere else or if the universal indult ever becomes a reality. In more positive indult Mass news:
The old Latin Mass will return to the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston for the first time since 1970 when Monsignor Edward Sadie leads a special service at 2 p.m. Sunday at Sacred Heart Co-Cathedral. The church choir will sing in Latin as well.
Sadie thought it was a good idea when the Catholic Church dropped the Tridentine Mass — Catholics know it as the Latin Mass — in 1970. It had been many centuries since Latin was the language of the people, and that was never the case in America.
Now Sadie thinks it’s a good idea to bring the Tridentine Mass back to his church, where two priests celebrate Mass six times a weekend, but generally not at 2 p.m. Sunday.

“I’m anxious to bring back to church any who feel they were abandoned or neglected,” he said. “I want to meet the needs of people who feel strongly about it.”
He is getting calls from people around the state who want to attend Sunday’s Latin Mass. Some are older Catholics nostalgic for the Mass as it was before 1970, Sadie said. “Some are younger Catholics who think we lost a lot,” he said.
Though why is it that older Catholics who grew up with the Tridentine Mass and prefer it are always labeled as nostalgic?

I am beginning to see why there is such reistance to the Latin Mass. Build it and they will come. (to the conseternation of the lay leftist cabals that run many bishop’s offices.)

Nostalgia? I beg to differ. I occasionally take road trips to an FSSP parish in Scranton, PA, and the vast majority of their parishoners are…young families with lots of little kids! Yep, most of the people in the congregation at the Tridentine Mass there were not even born when the old mass was the norm, much less have nostalgia for it. And I’m only 20 myself, and didn’t even attend my first Traditional mass until last year.
Oh, and calling the Tridentine mass the “Latin Mass” is a bit of a misnomer seeing as how all masses in the Western rite of the Church are technically “Latin Masses.” Sacrosanctum Concilium did not banish the Latin, despite what the hippie liturgists would have you believe.

And people say there are no women clergy.
Update at http://www.cleveland.catholicnet.com/parish/strose/ about halfway down the page, under “Special Notice”.
There are other indult masses in the diocese. Aside from St. Rose on the West side, Bishop Pilla had also granted indults to Immaculate Conception on the East side, and also to a church in Akron.
Yet SSPX, SSPV, and CMRI are all active in the diocese.
Heh.
One of the most bull-strong orthodox Catholic priests in Milwaukee, a Pole, and a tough little guy as well, used the term “nostalgic” to refer to a certain hymn I used at a Sunday Mass.
I advised him in no uncertain terms that “nostalgia” had NOTHING to do with the selection of virile and excellent hymnody.
To his credit, he acceded and never used the word again in reference to any music I selected.
As a 19-year-old who only went to her first Tridentine Mass a year ago, I can say it’s definitely not nostalgia that brings me, or many of the people I see there. The problem is, many people who are willing to tolerate us if we go out of nostalgia get angry if we say there’s an other reason. I guess they’re pretty defensive of their own “worship style,” especially if we don’t admit that okay, theirs is better, we just grew up with ours. (I’m not talking about the Mass itself right now, just the way it is celebrated. You simply do not find guitars and rain sticks at a 1962 Mass *ever*.)
Has the news gotten around that Bishop Loverde of Arlington has begun to allow the Indult for the first time? The old Mass will be offered at a few parishes, beginning in August, once the priests have been trained.
I wish our good Bishop of WV had allowed the Tridentine Mass at the St Joseph Co-Cathedral instead of all the way down in Charleston. I mean, the northern panhandle (Wheeling to Weirton) where I live, has more Catholics in it than the whole rest of the diocese (which is the entire state.) Steubenville is a few min away, and so are a lot of Pittsburgh suburbanites who would probably have made the trip if it were permitted up this way! Charleston, however, is about 6 or 7 hours away. I would have thought it would have been more prudent to put this ‘experiment’ closer to the majority of practicing Catholics. Sigh.
Maybe they’ll be so impressed with the outcome down state that they’ll extend it to other parishes. I do hope so – our large, *young* post-VII family would love to attend. Never have been before, so “nostalgia” has nothing to do with it. A deep hunger for beauty and reverence does.
I’m “nostalgic” for the time when girls didn’t serve at the altar, the practice having been strictly forbidden by the Holy Father.
You know, 1992.
First and foremost the Latin Mass (Tridentine)CODIFIED at the Echumenical Council of Trent was not an invention of the council of Trent. Anthropology & history trace the Liturgy known as Tridentine to the 2nd & 3rd century C.E. & retains most of what was handed down during the Apostolic epoc. The liturgy sometimes referred to as normative, Novus Ordo missae, Pauline, venacular.was a total revision of almost 2000 years of tradition. The so-called new mass in part might be seen as an invention of the discredited/Masonic archbishop Annibale Bugnini with suggestive input by protestant clerics originally invited to the 2nd vatican council as observers. Why Pope Paul the 6th unleasted this service on the universal church is beyond understanding. The process of protestanization of the liturgy is not dissimilar to the precess Henry the 8th of England used to wrench the English Church from the Catholic faith with the aid of schismatic/heretical Catholic clerics like Cranmer & Archbishop Cromwell. It was only a matter of one generation after that apostasy that “Mary’s Dowry” England was totally heretic and Schismatic and remains so to this day, it is called Anglicanism. What are the fruits of vatican 2,radical decline in mass attendance in Europe & North America, heretical experimentation by priests and Bishops vis a vis the liturgy some of which is blatantly heterodoxy, radical decline in vocations to the priesthood and religious life, growing apathy and relativism amoung the Catholic populations of Europe and North America, An incredable ignorance of faith by the majority of Catholic Christians and the list go’s on. In recent years a massive international interest in the restoration of the Tridentine liturgy has been growing especially amoung Catholic youth, Latin Masses whether they be indult, independant, or sedevacantist are filled to overflowing Traditional seminaries monasteries, convents and Abbeys are turning away candidates for the priesthood and religious life simply for the lack of space and resources. So I posit the question where is the real grow in the Catholic Church in the year 2006 C.E. Shalom
