In this screed by Harold Meyerson in the Washington Post, John Paul II is at fault for the latest Anglican schism in Virginia for the formation of the Orthodox International (OI).
The OI’s founding father was none other than Pope John Paul II, who spent much time and energy endeavoring to reconcile various orthodox Christian religions and whose ecumenism prompted him to warn the Anglicans not to ordain gay priests.
John Paul also sought to build his church in nations of the developing world where traditional morality and bigotry, most especially on matters sexual, were in greater supply than in secular Europe and the increasingly egalitarian United States, and more in sync with the Catholic Church’s inimitable backwardness. Now America’s schismatic Episcopalians are following in his footsteps — traditionalists of the two great Western hierarchical Christian churches searching the globe for sufficiently benighted bishops.
Gee who would have thought that we could blame an Anglican schism because Anglicans listened to the Pope.
Personally I am waiting for the new Fox series The O.I., no beach scenes but plenty of Tiber heresy smack-down action.
Deal Hudson bloging on the same stories said:
Meyerson cites once again a report I have seen before that Nigerian Archbishop Peter Akinola, under whose authority some of these Episcopal parishes are putting themselves, is an advocate of laws against such things as homosexuals meeting openly in restaurants. As far as I am concerned, this is neither Christian nor orthodox. I await verification of Akinola’s position on such matters, but if it is true then I doubt if these break-away parishes will finally unite with the Nigerian archdiocese. They will find some other communion, or form one of their own.
These Episcopalians did not break away from one kind of nonsense to join forces with another.

This is TOO rich!
“traditionalists of the two great Western hierarchical Christian searching the globe for sufficiently benighted bishops.”
Who is in schism here?
These Anglicans have not even broken with the Anglican Communion, but simply broke from the Episcopal Church USA, which itself is still somehow in communion with the Worldwide Anglican Communion – the whole things seems rather precarious to me. If they (the “O.I.”) are schismatic, it is only because they still hold to the Anglican Communion!
“Tiber heresy smack-down action.”
That’s good. I’m putting that one in the book.
reminds me of urban dictionary’s definition of “smackalacka:”
A two player smacking game. Players start on opposite ends of the room and approach eachother while acting like apes and making ape noises in a rythmic manner. Once next to each other the players quickly spin in circles letting gravity control their arms. The players continue spinning while saying “smackalacka-lacka-l acka…” until one player can’t take it anymore. At which point a winner is crowned
I just noticed the article says that JPII established the OI on countries where traditional morality and ‘bigotry’ are more widespread than America or Europe and more in sync with the Catholic Church’s ‘inimitable backwardness’.
As Diogenes has pointed out, it seems ironic that these things happen because the ECUSA, which didn’t used to have gay or female priests or bishops, now does; it didn’t used to bless gay “unions”, but now does so; it didn’t used to ignore biblical morality, but now disregards it wholly.
So, with all these changes, the fault for the reaction lies with those who refuse to change?
Surely gays are today’s lepers. Hope Jesus comes back soon as we need him to help these Christians (Pharisees) read the gospels AGAIN. No gays mentioned, right???
1 Corinthians, chapter 15
33: Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.”
34: COME TO YOUR RIGHT MIND, AND SIN NO MORE. For some have no knowledge of God. I say this to your shame.
Ick. Sounds like Chick-style insanity is still rampant. Sad…
I guess that Meyerson is setting himself up as Pope — defining what it is to be a proper Christian. Seems like an odd role for a Jewish writer, don’t you think?
I’m sure, on the other hand, that the dissident Episcopalians would argue that they are splitting with the national body because of increasingly non-Biblical teaching and conduct by that body. Of course, that would require allowing that the Bible might be more than a bunch of fairy stories for the ignorant to follow and the enlightened (like Meyerson) to dismiss as irrelevant.
And by the way — it seems to me that Meyerson made a calculated decision in going after these folks for failing to follow his secularist vision, rather than, for example, Muslims. After all, Episcopalians are unlikely to threaten him with death or chop his head off.
“Surely gays are today’s lepers.”
How many lepers came to Jesus and asked Him for help to be re-integrated to society but wanting to KEEP the leprosy?
Leper-speak, as I know it, sounds more like, “Lord, I am wretched; heal me, for You who can do all things can heal those who cannot heal themselves.” Leprosy, in that case, calls out to Jesus in a special way. The “leprosy” that throws itself a parade and demands to be crowned at a beauty pageant is an as yet undefinable mutation, I think. A true leper, in the biblical sense, is humble.
ECUSA fuuuuuudge…
