Dec. 7, 2006 (CWNews.com) – The Vatican has confirmed an American bishop’s decision to excommunicate members of the dissident group Call to Action.
Call to Action is “causing damage to the Church of Christ,” wrote Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, the prefect of the Congregation for Bishops, in a letter to Bishop Fabian Bruskewitz of Lincoln, Nebraska.
In March 1996, Bishop Bruskewitz had announced the excommunication of all Catholics in his diocese who were members of Call to Action or several other dissident groups which he described as “totally incompatible with the Catholic faith.”
The Nebraska chapter of Call to Action appealed the bishop’s decision to the Vatican. In his November 24 letter to Bishop Bruskewitz, Cardinal Re reports that Vatican’s finding that the disciplinary action was “properly taken.”

the issue of schism and apostacy has caused many damages in the church i pray the group will understand and be called to order stephen
This decision should cause some after-shocks around the country. And in this town I expect those after-shocks will be felt at St. Joan of Arc! (Well maybe not.)
I agree with Stephen that we pray for the members of CTA that they seek, through eranest prayer and counseling, to return to the teachings of the Catholic Church and it’s Magisterium.
I’m glad that Cardinal Re stood up for Bishop Bruskiewitz!
Now, if CTA could only see the error of its way and return to the fold…
Good. Let’s not be afraid to take more of these groups to task. But who is going to excommunicate the bishops and priests who wrote Always Our Children?
There were ten other groups mentioned in the article on the Nebraska diocesan website – the number 10, not the names. Anyone know who they were?
Besides Call to Action and Call to Action Nebraska, here are the ten:
Planned Parenthood
Society of Saint Pius X
Hemlock SOciety
Saint Michael the Archangel Chapel
Freemasons
Job’s Daughters
DeMolay
Eastern Star
Rainbow Girls
Catholics for a Free Choice.
The current ruling from the Holy See only applies to Call to Action, however, because they were the only group to file an appeal with the Vatican. (Initial appeal rejected in 2005, I think by the Congregation of Faith, but I’m not quite sure. This is a second appeal, which I believe was appealing the authority of Bishop Bruskewitz to issue the legislation. There may be a third appeal in the works based on what CTA claims is a “violation of Canon Law,” which it isn’t.)
i supported Bishop Bruskiewitz to excommunicate members of CTA.
but i think SSPX is different with CTA.
We need SSPX laity & sincere priests obediently in our Church, and keep the catholic tradition going. Holy See and SSPX must continue their dialogue, both leader must give way so the catholics will grow stronger and stronger in term of faith and tradition.
PRAY FOR PAPA.
at least SSPX know how to pray for the Pope.
