Governor McGreevy announces he is now an "Episcopalian American", though some consider it redundant from his announcement two years ago that ‘I am a gay American.‘
So good luck to him as he enters an Episcopalian seminary. He really will really stick out there, you know being a Governor.
Carl Olson opines:
As strange as it might sound, I’m thankful that McGreevey is being honest enough about what he believes and how he wants to live to recognize that he could no longer be Catholic. Obviously, it would be far better if he were to reconcile with the Church. But, since that apparently isn’t going to happen anytime soon, it’s best that he not pretend to be a devout, obedient Catholic while holding views that clearly contradict Church teaching. Now, if only some other politicians would be equally honest and consistent..

How long will it be before McGreevy is an Episcopal bishop?? Like Bishop Robinson of N.H.
I assume that you are referring to that great groupie of Syrian Baathists, Rep. Nancy Peolosi. But as it is often foolish, but human, to make assumptions, I also wonder if Archbishop George Niederauer might consider if he is truly a Catholic or perhaps a misplaced Episcopalian. After all we both have great vestments and mitres. But let’s respectfully leave that to his Excellency’s conscience and pray that the Lord jolts it a bit.
While I agree it’s good he’s no longer providing scandal and working publicly for evil. From a personal standpoint this has a bad aspect not often mentioned.
It’s more than a heresy he’s propounding – as such, his choice of a “church” is not really about being “honest” about his beliefs. It’s about choosing a group which will validate and encourage him to continue sinning. That can’t be good for him or his salvation.
Were someone to commit suicide – that may be honest expression of despair, but it’s not a good step at all.
Mark makes good points, here. For myself, in these situations where the Church loses a member, my heart and my head are always in conflict. I know that a right thing has happened for today (justice and the good of the Church) but I am sad over the loss. I find that the Divine Mercy prayers help straighten out my response as well as being possibly the most effective response. Mercy instills hope.
