“Liberal Catholics have much more in common with liberal Protestants than they do with the kind of Catholics whom Donohue’s organization claims to represent. ” -Article
The article ripped that quote from one of Donahue’s own. He once mentioned that he has more in common with more conservative protestants than he does with many Catholic liberals.
The irony is enhanced by the fact that her arguments and rhetorical flourishes are the exact same ones once used by nativists, Know-Nothings, and anti-Catholic bigots in the 19th century. If I had the time and the stomach to go searching through speeches by protestant anti-Catholics in the 19th century, I’ll bet I could find many phrases almost exactly mirroring those used by Ms. Jacoby.
