Kitchener — On Saturday, March 29,
2008 at 8:00 p.m. people around the world will turn off their lights
for just one hour — Earth Hour — to show it’s possible to take action
on climate change.
The Waterloo Catholic District School Board is fully supporting Earth
Hour as part of the Board’s overall sustainable development strategy.

You know, I wonder how many people are going to turn off their lights at 8 PM and then spend that hour watching TV.
I wish every school board like this supported traditional Catholic moral teaching in such a manner. If you question the validity of global warming, you may be required to face the secular CDF: Al Gore! Yikes!
Ok, 3/39 at 8:00 pm I am going to turn on all my lights! Nut, at that time I will begin the celebration of the Easter Vigil. Well, I will be lighting a big fire that will give off lots of CO2. That will have to do.
Where exactly is Kitchener/Waterloo?
Iowa, or Ontario Canada, or some other locale?
I need to know to make sure I never go there.
Sounds like those Waterloo folks will be sitting in the dark — an apt metaphor! And, speaking of apt metaphors, wasn’t Waterloo where Napoleon got his can kicked?!
Brian Day,
K-W is in Ontario, Canada; it’s where I live now. It’s a bit funny that the local church is worried about energy conservation, since it is not sustainable, but rather is disappearing. Furthermore, its retention of the younger faithful is about zero. A large ecological footprint should be its last worry.
By the 29th, it will still be light out at 8 pm. so I won’t need to turn on the lights anyway. Who’s brain fart idea was this?
How them vocations coming along? Oh? They’re not? Then quit worrying about the lights.
God rewards orthodoxy.
I think the Bible may give us a clue as to what was going on in the Diocese of Waterloo…
2 Samuel 24:10-13 – Kitchener Edition
10 David was conscience-stricken after he had counted the liturgical abuses, and he said to the LORD, “I have sinned greatly in what I have done. Now, O LORD, I beg you, take away the guilt of your servant. I have done a very foolish thing.”
11 Before David got up the next morning, the word of the LORD had come to Gad the prophet, David’s seer: 12 “Go and tell David, ‘This is what the LORD says: I am giving you three options. Choose one of them for me to carry out against you.’ “
13 So Gad went to David and said to him, “Shall there come upon you three years of Latin in your mass? Or three cycles of charting your wives fertility while they learn Natural Family Planning? Or turn off your lights for just one hour — Earth Hour — to show it’s possible to take action on climate change? Now then, think it over and decide how I should answer the one who sent me.”
I think Fr. Erik’s going to be in for a big surprise when no one shows up to this parish on 3/29 for a second Easter Vigil service – two Sundays in a row! Just joking with you Father.
I’m going to turn off my lights in solidarity as well. I’ve dedicated 1am-7am as lights off in my house for the next fifty years or so.
Ummm, yeah, gotta check that calendar–oh that one is our Julian calendar celebration. That’s my story and I am sticking with it.
Easter isn’t on March 23. What falls on March 23 this year is Wester.
