I was listening to Leo Laporte’s Tech Guy podcast and one women called up about site advice and mentioned one of her websites called rosarybelts.com.
This has got to be one of the strangest image juxtapositions I have ever seen.

What was that about “getting your rosaries off my ovaries”? Just another dumb fashion statement.

And yet, if you go on into the site, there are some truly beautiful rosaries made out of semi-precious stones and silver crucifixes. There’s also some semi-stupid, semi-sensible stuff, like a rosary-shaped ankle bracelet made to go around boots, or a rosary with a Star of David on the end. Some of the crucifixes have weird stuff hanging off them, but they also have little cherubim.
It’s as if the artist can’t decide whether to be serious or not — makes the silly stuff to justify the normal stuff as “art”, and puts in some shock value to prove she’s not one of those normal people — but the artist can’t help making rosaries.
We live in a very confused culture.

What I want is a good way to carry my good rosary without it getting beaten up in my purse, the soft sided cases don’t work well enough if the rosary is of any of the more fragile stone beads or glass beads.
I wish they used more taste and showed the plastic model in a nice simple little black dress–it would show off the belt just fine–but even then, I object to the use of the Rosary as a piece of clothing.
Its a mannequin. I would have thought the reaction would be against using the rosary as meaningless jewelry. The ‘artist’ seems to think there’s a certain ‘cache’ in rosaries. Go figure.
So, does this mean that all respect for the rosary has been lost? It certainly seems that way to me considering its being treated as a piece of(while extremely beautiful)jewelery and not as an instrument of prayer.
If you’re using a rosary primarily as a rosary, then you could certainly wear it. It’s not the custom among most English-speaking Catholics, but it’s got a long history from medieval times on. (Though not usually as a belt.)
Using a rosary as clothing only… yes, that’s a bit disrespectful.

Have you considered a plastic bottle used to sell some kind of patent medicine such as aspirin, Bufferin, or something like that? If you don’t use any product like that you could ask friends and relatives for one of an appropriate size. Some years ago my then pastor tried the “fasting from holy water” during Lent nonsense for two years before coming to his senses. I took a small, cylindrical prescription drug bottle with a twist-off top to another church that still had holy water and filled it. I carried it in my pocket like a “hip flask” used during Prohibition. I still keep a bottle like that filled with holy water at home and use it when I get up in the morning.
Rosaries have been treated as pieces of jewelry and not as instruments of prayer for centuries. Sumptuary laws, which regulated who could wear what jewelry, often excepted rosaries, with just the sort of results you’d expect.
Seriously, though, it’s a little hot, right? I mean that in an entirely sacramental, theology of the body sort of way, of course. But, I mean … right? A little bit? Guys?
