Long time blogger Elena has an excellent post on Sean and Carolyn Savage ,the Ohio couple that gave birth via IVF to a baby that was not biologically theirs after the fertility clinic accidentally placed embryos from another mother into Carolyn’s uterus. Fortunately they did not abort the child and claimed their Catholic faith was instrumental in that decision while at the same time not seeing the disconnect with the Church teaching about IVF. Her post covers their bishop’s general statement on this and their overreaction to it and just how far off their are from understanding basics of their faith.

Thanks Jeff!
Our local bishops and priests speak even less about IVF than they do about contraception and abortion. I’ve heard abortion mentioned about once a year during mass. I’ve heard contraception, purgatory, hell mentioned once or twice ever during mass. but never IVF.
Though there are some small (very small) positive signs. A friend shared this little conversation she had with her priest….
priest: What’s IVF?
friend: in-vitro fertilization
priest: what’s the church position on it?
friend: the church is against it
priest: why?
friend: it attempts to accomplish procreation in isolation from the love of the marital act
priest: oh ok, thanks
