Within short hours after the Papal election I was already getting email from Catholic stores hawking merchandise with the Pope’s picture on it.
The Crescat has made a most wonderful connection between this and an episode of Portlandia and if you are not aware of “Put A Bird On It”, do yourself a favor and watch it. Growing up in Portland I am a big fan of the sketch comedy show that parodies hipsters and life in Portland (or did I repeat myself?).
The Crescat has done some great commentary on this that I am in awe of while also being annoyed that I didn’t make the same connection.

According to recent Vatican the Pope is not to used in any way not suitable to his office for Merchandizing purposes. Maybe they can make an exception for a newly elected Pope, but I think a holy card type picture should be enough. It was that way back in the 1978 “Year of Three Popes” and By the way I ended up with picture cards of all THREE Popes Paul VI, John Paul I, and John Paul II. In the last several ears I got at least 4 pictures of the Pope Emeritus, and hopefully pretty soon I will be sent a picture card of the new Pope Francis (I am a big fan of the Papacy as a whole) and my collection will be complete. I also got a very rare antique item- a gold coin of St. Pius X from his papacy from a friend of mine who is Greek Orthodox.

Jeff! I don’t want to get off topic but this morning at a church from another city that my wife and I attended ….well long story short we normally name only “ONE” Papa but this morning at Mass the priest prayed for pope Benedict and Francis then when on to name their bishop. Anyway I hope that “IT” was not just a slip UP cause what’s wrong with praying out loud for both our Papa
I hear YA! Victor! You’re never off topic but I can’t always speak for sinner vic though! 🙁

Bless you Victor,
there is nothing wrong in praying for Benedict. I love him and pray for him. But there is something wrong in praying for him during the prayer of consecration, as he is NOT our Pope anymore. During that prayer we are supposed to pray for our Pope, our Bishop and all clergy. During the interregnum, we did not pray for our Pope because we did not have one.
Perhaps we should pray for him during the intercessions, maybe including him in the list of of people in poor health, since he resigned exactly for health and strength reasons.
But mentioning him together with Francis sends the message that we have two Popes, which is not true.
