NPR has a story “College Course Lumps Homosexuality, Rape, Murder”
GetReligion posts on the one-sided nature of the story and asks “Is this a smear job or simply bad journalism?” Well as a Catholic I say “both/and”.
Tim Drake of the National Catholic Register has a solid piece on the story which includes the fact that the complaining group didn’t even contact the University first to complain before taking the story to the press along with other relevant details.
This type of conflation to portray things in the worst light possible is nothing new for opponents of the Church. Not that long ago when the revised norms (Normae de Gravioribus Delictis) issued by the Holy See included women’s ordination. Headlines shouted how the Church viewed women’s ordination as the same thing as child sexual abuse. Funny how journalist can’t make the simplest distinctions when it doesn’t fit their agenda.

This is why I love Franciscan University (my alma mater) – they will preach the truth and beauty of our faith no matter what! The promoting this attack claims he was a Theology/Philosophy student too. I am guessing he cut class a few too many times.
The article states: “There was an uncoordinated effort to try to contact the university,” explained Gregory Gronbacher, a 1990 graduate of FUS and member of the Facebook group. “I reached out via email, but didn’t hear back. All of the emails bounced back.”
Having spoken to the people in the group, they did write e-mails to the head of alumni, the Psychology Chair, and the Dean. All were bounced back, for whatever reason.
FUS simply needs to revise the course description to say “sexual deviance” as another chapter is “heterosexual deviance”.
The public release from the FUS Gay Alumni and Allies spoke from how it came across to them, being both Alumni and a few being psychologists. Homosexuality as such is not a deviant “behavior” in the strict use of the term, but action connected with that disposition is. The group did not ask them to drop the course, or even stop teaching the truth; it is simply a matter of wording of a course description.
This particular case is where all Catholic education is heading. I don’t mean the specific curriculum of a school. But when orthodox Catholic teaching can be classified as hate speech, with all of the legal injunctions that people want to put on them, then the schools will be under attack in an unprecedented matter.
This is a foreshadowing of the full scale delegitimization of Catholic education in America.
Strap yourselves in, boys and girls.
And of course any time we point out that the mainstream media are biased against us, even with such indisputable proof as you cite here, the predictable excuse will be that journalists have always spun stories like that in order to garner the most intrigue via outrage and controversy. Under no circumstances may we suggest that there may be something more malicious behind incompetent news-reporting. We should thus restrain any indignation we might have thought ourselves to warrant and proceed quietly to the end of a very long line, behind everyone else who’s been a negative side-effect of mere sensationalism. You see, after all, greed for higher sales, ratings, and ad revenue is undeniably egalitarian in its distribution of abusive iniquity. So it’s of no consequence whether we demonstrate any unfair coverage or not, as, either way, our right to complain is rather effectively neutralized.
After reading what Tim Drake wrote, “IT” reminded me of what Panda Rosa said regarding Same-Sex-Marriage and in so many words she was afraid that some of their supporters had an agenda.
I can only speak as a Canadian when “I” say that their agenda has been very successful in Canada. I recall that years before our NOW Prime Minister came into office, Canada had a vote in our Federal institution asking in so many words wheather or not same-sex-marriage should be allowed in Canada. Long story short, parliament voted and “IT”. same-sex-marriage, lost by an over welming vote.
Anyway Canadians went back to work and forgot about “IT” but let’s just say that the agenda that was started by some who did not give UP their so called fight of pushing that so called enveloppe. Longer story short, my parents an always been Liberals and I’m not going to say that Our Canadian so called “Sponsorship issue” was cause by “IT” but GOD only knows for sure? Let’s just say that parliament had another fairly quiet vote and same-sex-marriage was passed by “ONE” vote and then I wrote a letter to our NOW The Right Honourable Stephen Harper saying in so many words that if there really was a GOD in heaven, he would be our next Prime Minister and then I officially became a Conservative for the first time.
I hear ya Jeff! I don’t really know and/or care if you’ve been drinking again Victor butt, I also recall that Panda Rosa also said in so many words that she thought that you needed a little help because you might not all be there if ya know what “I” mean? 🙂
“IT” IS ALL YOUR FAULT sinner vic! 🙁
Don’t worry Victor and in response to all concerned, I’m sure that the university plans to review the course description.!?
Peace
