Listening to Catholic Answers a caller says that there are a hundred similarities between Jesus and Horus. Jimmy Akin replied “Yes they both have Falcon heads.” The caller went on to to say he had read this list on the internet and Jimmy Akin interjected “You can trust everything on the internet.’ I just love that kind of dry humor that makes a point without mocking the caller and of course Jimmy went on with more specific and well thought out objections.
The interplay of Jimmy Akin and Patrick Coffin is also particularly good and I really like their banter which ranges in subjects and Patrick keeps up admirably with the encyclopedic Jimmy Akin. I always liked their previous host Jerry Usher who you could see grow in knowledge over the years, but Patrick Coffin is an excellent replacement who is both very funny and adept as a host to guide the conversations and to provide very thoughtful answers himself.
The interplay also of Patrick Madrid and Patrick Coffin is also very enjoyable as the dueling Patricks with very similar voices have a different pattern in their bantering, but equally fun. Really the interplay between Patrick Coffin and the other hosts such as Tim Staples are all unique in their way with good rapport.
The use of humor in shows such as Catholic Answers is I think very important in keeping the show relaxed while being able to dive into serious questions at times and when the callers are sometimes adversarial it also keeps the show from becoming dueling heads as in cable news.

Have always loved Jimmy Akin’s contributions to the show. Not afraid to tell callers “you’re wrong, and I’ll tell you why.” A well educated convert with a lot of dry humour in a Texas twang. What’s not to like?
So what about all the similarities?
Right on, Jeff. These fellows on Catholic Answers Live really make my day sometimes. Their loving humor is the best witness for the faith anywhere, anytime, but especially now, in what seems like the dark valley of today’s hyper-secular world.
I was in the wilderness for over thirty years (finally returned four years ago). Yet I was never a “seeker” , because true Catholic witness (as opposed to Pelosi etc. Catholic witness, which, by God’s grace, I was always able to recognize as a different creature ) is THE most sincerely loving. So my reasoning was always that if any Christian tradition is true, it is the Catholic faith. The folks on Catholic Answers Live are the best evangelists for stupid intellectuals LIKE ME.
I would say they might have accellerated my reversion if I had discovered them earlier – but I probably wasn’t broken enough.
God bless them.
People who require humor to enjoy the Faith are fakes. If you can’t enter spiritual ecstasy while reading dry as Ezekiel’s bones treatises, you need to go be a Methodist. Or something.
Ian, you simply prove the point.
So what about all the similarities?
Here is a link (http://www.bringyou.to/apologetics/JesusEvidenceCrucifiedSaviors.htm) that goes through many of the pagan gods that are the usual candidates for similarities with Jesus. The upshot of which is that few share very many similarities, the similarities that are there are surface similarities that fall apart on closer inspection, and none can show a causal connection (or the post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy for eggheads. :))
Thanks for turning me on to Catholic Answers. I’ll check it out.
I am a long time Catholic Answers listener and I have listened to all of the archives when they were online. Jerry and Johnny H were good hosts and I hope they are doing well. Patrick is a clever bloke and it is no surprise that he is now a Catholic Answers speaker. I don’t have a problem when Patrick adds his information to a guest’s answer as long as he waits for the guest to finish replying but I find the filling -in- time banter irritating, partly I think because it is probably a bloke thing and I’m not one. It comes across to me as oneupmanship and I don’t like that. The balanced, objective replies to questions which most of the guests on CA give are a delight to listen to and I have often gone to the archives to transcribe a particularly good answer.
Scott, thanks for the link.
