With Senator Boxer and others once again bringing up the argument comparing Viagra to abortion and that if health care pays for one it must pay for the other for equality; you have to wonder when they will ever raise a serious argument.
This argument makes a fundamental error in it’s comparison. An error that is all to prevalent. True health care is aimed at health. Now that is a rather simple statement, but it seems to be forgotten. Medicines like Viagra are suppose to repair a problem. To restore the body to health. Direct abortion does not make a women healthier. It does nothing for the health of the child other than to eliminate it. So this is truly an apple and oranges comparison.
Unfortunately there is a lot of so called heath care that is nothing of the kind. Sterilization and contraception are obstructions and actually prevent the human body to work as intended. They do not make the reproductive system healthier since it causes it to not function correctly. Hormonal contraception has other effects that not only fool the body into to thinking it’s pregnant 24/7 but has other side effects that cause harm not health.

If Boxer’s comparison were not convincing to senators, and therefore dangerous to the unborn, her analogy would be funny as well as ignorant. She got away with it!!! At least at the time. Yikes. And she kept saying the amendment came from MEN, blah, blah, blah.
Hmmm…Maybe Sarah Palin should run for senator so that she can spearhead legislation that protects children AND women and the elderly, etc. What would the shriekers say then?
“Suppose you were a senator. And, suppose you were an idiot. But, I repeat myself.” Mark Twain
Name one great advance in civilization, architecture, art, science, or agriculture that was achieved by central planners and collectivists.
The final outcome of the Obama/Axelrod/Pelosi/Reid agenda (statist collectivization) will be universal impoverishment – that’s social justice: “Blest are the poor . . . “.
American small businesses will be strangled by soaring state and federal taxes, particularly when cap and trap and hell care deform pass. Small companies generate 70% of jobs. Want to stimulate the economy? Give tax cuts to small businesses. The current statist, top-down stimulus will not work largely because its beneficiaries – destroy rather than create jobs – are big government, and big unions.
The acttual perpetrators of the economic melt-down are (getting more power) overly powerful, wrong-headed institutions like the Fed, FNMA, Congress not individuals or groups of individuals acting in their own interests.
Further empowerment of big institutions is the wrong solution and will fail.
We must have limited government. These morons could muck up a wet dream.
Frankly, I’d always considered Viagara a recreational drug because the problem it “cures” tends to be a natural part of male aging. (Age-related impotence would seem to have the practical benefit of there being fewer children with fathers so old they don’t have a good chance of living until the child is grown up.) Recreational use is certainly the way Viagara is regarded in the general culture. But I guess you’re right, it can be regarded as fixing a health problem.
Of course you’re right about the apple and oranges nature of comparing medicine to a procedure that kills one human and provides little or, more often, NO health benefit to the other human involved. And, to make it worse, may cause health problems.
Just to clear it up for everyone, Viagra’s primary function is to decrease blood pressure (which allows greater blood flow to the body – and therefore an erection in men). My son, who was born with severe pulmonary hypertension due to other complications was put on Viagra as a newborn to decrease his pulmonary hypertension and I found out then that Viagra is the primary drug of choice for these complications. The problem is that advertising suggests this “recreational use” and people get confused about it’s real importance in saving lives (my son wouldn’t be alive today without it working then) instead we see it as something having to do with a malfunction in the reproductive system (which seems to be exactly what pregnancy is to Senator Boxer).
Plato (The Republic, I think) quotes Sophocles regarding old age curing a man’s lust.
Sophocles: “Most gladly I have escaped the thing . . . I feel as if I have escaped from a mad and furious master – old age a great sense of calm and freedom, when the passions relax their hold . . . freed of many masters.”
I (an old coot) agree.
