William M. Daley– son of legendary Chicago mayor Richard J. Daley, brother of current mayor Richard M. Daley, US commerce secretary from 1997 to 2000, chairman of Al Gore’s 2000 presidential campaign, co-chairman of Barack Obama’s presidential campaign, and a Catholic– has harshly criticized Cardinal Francis George for opposing the University of Notre Dame’s decision to award President Barack Obama an honorary degree. “Cardinal Francis George recently said this invitation is an embarrassment to Catholics because the president disagrees with church doctrine on abortion and stem-cell research,” writes Daley. “But I believe Cardinal George’s stand is an embarrassment to Chicago Catholics and furthers the divide among the church, its members and the rest of America.”
I guess that explains the petition with over 234,000 thousand signatures condemning Cardinal George – oh wait the petition is a against the Presidents invite. Rather funny about a Daley discussing what is an embarrassment to Chicago.

If Cardinal George’s statement “furthers the divide among the church, its members and the rest of America,” it no doubt does so along the faultline that exists between the faithful and the faithless. If that be the case, then I shall be happy to provide the good Cardinal with additional dynamite, along with ropes to catch any of the faithless who wish to leap across the widening chasm and join the ranks of the faithful.
Leave to one of the Daley clan to criticize someone else for actually doing their job.
For the last time, it’s Francis Cardinal George, not Cardinal Francis George!!!
And yeah, it’s the bishop who’s playing politics, not, you know, the professional politician.
I suspect that Chicago Catholics (if they are worthy of the name) are far more offended by the corruption of Chicago politicians than they are by the integrity of the Church. I’m sure that William Daley is as ethical as any politician, although ethical politicians seem to be as rare as snow-less winters in Chicago. I doubt that he has benefited in any way from his family’s long association with the Democratic Party. No, his views can’t be tainted by greed or ambition at all. Not a chance! His father was despised by the p.c. types which now dominate the Democratic Party. My, how easily the sons seem to forget their father and go with the flow. That reminds me of a certain Casey. Fathers should point to such men as examples of what their sons should not grow up to be. I guess family honor is passé, or just not p.c. Our Bishops are our shepherds and our leaders. It is always nice when one actually takes on that heavy burden. It is men such as Mr. Daley who seek to further, rather than heal, any divide within the Church.
The Daley family is an embarassment and needs to choose between politics and their faith. The positions they espouse in supporting abortion and gay marriage put them at odds with the Church. They should cease identifying themselves as Catholic and quite embarassing the rest of us. The liberals used to ridicule their father, Richard J. Daley, when he was mayor of Chicago. At least he would not have publicly criticized the cardinal nor be at odds with Church doctrine. He is most certainly rolling over in his grave.
Does anyone else notice how many ‘Catholics’ Obama seems to be keeping in his corner? Why would ND be one of so few colleges granted his appearance? It just seems to say something but I just don’t see what exactly.
