Zenit has an
interview with the
recently elevated Cardinal Daniel DiNardo that is great
reading.
…With regard to the liturgy, I think
we can take a cue from the liturgical piety of the Church Fathers. In
the Fathers, you see an emphasis not only on the words said at Mass,
but also the importance of the gestures of the liturgy. In other words, say the black, do the red.
I had previously read great things about this patristic scholar, but
this simple statement makes me really love him. What was the
last time you heard American Cardinal say something like “say the
black, do the red”? Cue chirping crickets.

I loved the comments too. I think the Church will be blessed by Archbishop DiNardo’s new position. It also doesn’t hurt us down in Houston. We never get good press, and we are the 4th largest city in the nation. No one knows that last fact though.
Keep the new Cardinals in your prayers.
I did my diaconate internship at the University of Houston. Bishop DiNardo arrived in Houston the second semester of my tenure there. At the end of the year, all of the campus ministers got together for a retreat. He was our celebrant and preacher. I was told as I arrived that I would serve as his deacon! Never in my short life as a deacon had I served a bishop. I expressed my reservations to my boss but tromped off to the sacristy nonetheless. When I got there, the good bishop noticed my distress, came over to me, put his hand on my shoulder and said, “Don’t worry, Philip, I’ll take care of the hat.” No worries from there on…
Fr. Philip, OP
Deo Gratias for this good Cardinal! May his influence spread among his peers and may all bishops say, SAY THE BLACK, DO THE RED!
And may this new Cardinal excel in all areas of the faith and my he be a HOLY and faithful leader always.
He’s certainly “doing the red” now.
Please explain to me “say the black, do the red”. My son was in his presence at the Vatican yesterday and today, and when he returns home, I want to be able to understand this.
The “black” is the text the priest is supposed to read aloud, while the “red” are the rubrics, which tell what the priest is supposed to do and how to do it.
Hi Jeff – sounds as if this Cardinal read the book “Hooked on Rubrics” that you posted about last year….either that, or he helped co-author it? You should put a link to that in this post, IMHO.
Peace
i feel blessed for his new postition. God certainly given him the best gift ever.i am so happy that i would cry because i am happy!!!!
People make big deal of the elevation of Archbishop Daniel DiNardo to the College of Cardinals a big deal. Actually for an ordinary Catholic like me life goes on unchanged. I do not expect him to come to me or I will be able go to him talk about things concerning my spiritual wellbeing or the welfare of the Church.
I still remember one time when the Chancellor, Mgsr Frank Ross, visited our parish, I tried to approach him to talk about things Catholic, he brushed me away as if he was too busy or too dignified to talk to a lowly parishioner. We need clergymen more approachable. Many of them spend a few years in Rome thinking they know every thing without much actual experiences in the parishes. The ideal situation is to elevate priests from the parishes who have real pastoral experiences to the positions of Chancellor, bishop, cardinal and/or pope, so that they know what is going on within the Church; not those ivory tower persons such as Rossi… That is what they did in the early Christian Church…
Cardinal Dinardo and his group of Bishops in the Houston Galveston Archdiocese are about NOTHING BUT THE MONEY – while the Pope preached about the importance of the youth getting a Catholic Education – these people are shutting down one of the few remaining Catholic High Schools in Houston and the only one in the Southeast area of the 4th largest city in Houston. Mt Carmel has been in existence for 52 years! At the 50th annivesary they promised another 50! The made the decision in 2 days – first day told the faculty to look for another job and on the second day told the parents to look for another school. No warning no chance for fundraisers, no support, NOTHING. KIDS NOT CATHEDRALS!!! Save Mt. Carmel High School!
What is the Catholic Church going to do about the priest who are endorsing political candidates? This has always been a no, no. There is a priest in Chicago that needs to be kicked out of the priesthood. How do you expect the Catholic people to observe the Church’s teaching if a Catholic priest gets by with this? It makes me ashame watching this idiot speak against Clinton or anyone else in the manner he did. What do the non-Catholics think?
