I have not yet commented on the Giuliani-lightning strike incident during the Republican debates. While it is pretty funny it does seem to me to be more of a coincidence then a God incidence. Though I don’t have the inside track.
If lightning strikes and pro-abortion politicians was normal operating procedure for God’s providence it seems to me that we might have noticed this before now. For one most pro-abortion politicians would be sporting Don King hairstyles. We could power major grids by tapping the power from lightning strikes to the lightning rod above the U.S. Capital or DNC headquarters. Pro-abortion Republicans would be looking like scenes in Frankenstein when the monster is first animated. Washington D.C. would have the highest incidence of lightning strikes in the U.S. and inside of the Supreme Court would always smell like ozone and surely Justice Blackmun would have been sporting a Harry Potter-like lightning bolt on his head (though he obviously was a Death Eater). Plus wouldn’t the famous line used by pro-abortion politicians be "I am personally opposed, but ZAP!"

yeah, I am not saying it was divine intervention, but Giuliani certainly considered that for a moment. And the rest of the candidates certainly weren’t taking any chances as they gave him a wide berth.
Bishop Tobin sees it as you do, Jeff. But i think it is significant that Rudy does NOT…so maybe the receiver of a msg is more of an indicator? In any case, nothing occurs outside of God’s providence.
As for me, when I saw it I was reminded of that couple who tried to cheat St Peter. It WAS an apostle speaking the truth who was about to be disrespected by Guiliani when the lightening struck.
Miracles and God’s messages are not science–for that to have been God’s response it would not be necessary for such a response to be sent to man every time a Catholic refuses to defend life. Although that WOULD be cool. Maybe we should ask…
While I personally feel that divine retribution in the form of a lightning strike is perfectly normal I don’t feel that it is something that should be publicly recognized by the U.S. Government……ouch, ok, that hurt.
I just can’t help but wander if Giuliani’s reaction was maybe his conscience coming up to the surface a little??

Mr Guiliani apparently still has a functioning conscience and a fear of God. AND we do ask the Lord daily to bless our bishop–that thar looked like a blessing (and a warning) to me! Therefore i would be NUTS if I didn’t thank Him for it.
Thank you, Father, for the perfectly timed lightning!
An insightful take on lightning pols … but for an alternative take, courtesy “Tobit”, check this link out.
How about if, instead of a lightning strike, there were some regular reminders of hellfire at homilies in every Catholic Church in the country?
Yes, Rob, or at least make a united effort to preach on LIFE as a non-negotiable. At projo.com, there is a letter to the editor today suggesting that Bishop Tobin should be PUNISHED for daring to preach the Gospel and challenging Catholics to be faithful. The only resulting lightning bolt was in my brain when I read it! 🙂
