The New Yorker discusses a painting by Carlo Crivelli of St. Dominic and its uncanny resemblance to Rudy Giuliani. Unfortunately I think they are right about the resemblance. Though I do think their little illustration of “St. Rudy” is not going to make it as art for Catholics Against Rudy. Hat tip Papa Familias.
Resemblance that only goes skin deep

Rudy is someone that is going to get under my skin, especially if its Hillary v. Rudy. I will say this. I am not against Rudy because he is a marginal Catholic. I am against Rudy for the policies he promotes that are AGAINST Catholic teaching.

The New Yorker’s comparison of Rudy to St. Dominic has other presidential candidates rushing to be compared to saints. At a Iowa clambake yesterday, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton claimed that people always told her she looked just like St. Elizabeth. Later in the day she was claiming that President Clinton used to keep a picture of St. Teresa of Avila on his desk, since he said it looked just like her.
At a press conference in Pheonix, Senator John McCain claimed not only to look like St. Michael the Archangel, but explained the resemblance by stating that St. Michael was his great-grandfather.
Not to be outdone, John Edwards told reporters “Yeah – I heard about that Rudy thing, and I have to say, and I’ve never said this before to anyone, that people have always told me that I look just like that really, really phenomenally goodlooking saint. You know the one I’m talking about.”
In an embarrassing twist, both Senator Barack Obama and Governor Bill Richardson claimed that they looked exactly like St. Peter. The Reverend Al Sharpton came to Sen. Obama’s defense “Everyone knows that St. Peter was black. Come on! Where is Israel? It’s in Africa. Where are black people from? Africa. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that one out.”
Senator Joe Biden, returning from a extended fishing trip, found himself somewhat behind in the saint claiming. As a consummate politician, Biden immediately claimed resemblance to God. “I look just like him… that should tell you something.”
No, no. St. Dominic’s face was “handsome and somewhat ruddy,” not “Rudy.”
For a better idea of what St. Dominic probably looked like, try here.
Hmm, I don’t think it looks anything like him. Go figure.
“Later in the day she was claiming that President Clinton used to keep a picture of St. Teresa of Avila on his desk, since he said it looked just like her.”
Impossible. It is believed that St. Teresa was a very beautiful woman.
You can totally see the resemblance by comparing these two images: http://www.aug.edu/augusta/iconography/metropolitan/january2006/dominicCrivelli.html
