Via Relapsed Catholic:
The Catholic League’s William Donohue is a touchy old grump, but once in a while he makes a good point:
"To begin with, there has not been a single abortionist killed in the U.S. since 1998. When there were killings in the mid-1990s, Cardinal Roger Mahony of Los Angeles, chairman of the Pro-Life Activities of the bishops’ conference, said that such shootings make ‘a mockery of everything we stand for.’ When there were two killings at Massachusetts abortion clinics, Cardinal Bernard Law not only denounced them, he ordered a moratorium on sidewalk protest vigils outside abortion clinics in Boston. Cardinal John O’Connor’s response in New York was profound: ‘If anyone has an urge to kill an abortionist, kill me instead.’
"Just this week, a report of Muslim violence against Iraqi Christians was released. The study, Incipient Genocide, describes in detail ‘the deaths of Christian children — including babies—laypeople, priests and nuns who were burned, beaten or blown up in car bombs throughout the past few years.’ Moreover, Christian girls are being raped and having nitric acid thrown in their faces for not wearing veils. And the Muslim silence is deafening.’"
As is usually the case Kathy Shaidle’s post titles makes a brilliant point
More abortion clinics have been bombed on "Law & Order" than in real life…

Donahue however always leaves something to be desired. If you are a moderate in Kuwait or Bahrain or Quatar (where it appears (Quatar) the police helped Al Qaeda radicals out of prison several years ago… and you speak out, your throat may be slit in the middle of the night as Donahue moves on to yet another outrage that lights up that red but alive face of his and he’ll probably not notice your funeral notice in the Quatar newspapers. Even in the US years ago we had murders and several beheadings back in the 70’s amongst black muslims in inter mosque fights in Newark NJ. Christ Himself said not one bad word about the Roman Empire or its system because He would have been prosecuted and killed for that and that is not why He came to Jerusalem…that was not His plan. Likewise moderate muslims may have plans other than dying so as to defuse the redness in Donahue’s head (I’m part Irish…we see this glow alot). He is correct that moderate muslim leaders should risk death and make such statements but that is not the precision of his words quoted.
Bill, although you have a point and although I agree somewhat with your reservations about Donohue, that still does not explain the silence from Muslim groups here in the U.S. who keep trying to tell us that Islam is a “religion of peace.” If Cardinal O’Connor could offer his own life for an abortionist’s, I think an American Muslim think-tank could fax a press release to the media stating that rape, disfigurement, and murder are incompatible with a peaceful religion.
