There has been much talk recently within St. Blogs on the rumors of not only Tony Blair’s entrance into the Catholic Church, but his becoming a permanent Deacon.
Can. 1029 Only those are to be promoted to orders who, in the prudent judgment of their own bishop or of the competent major superior, all things considered, have integral faith, are moved by the right intention, have the requisite knowledge, possess a good reputation, and are endowed with integral morals and proven virtues and the other physical and psychic qualities in keeping with the order to be received.
Looking at the requirements of this Canon they don’t exactly scream Tony Blair to me. His record on homosexual acts is not exactly Catholic and just this year he said he did "a little skip" at a partnership ceremony on TV and that he is proud of his record concerning this. He has a 100 percent pro-abortion record and has helped to raise funds for Planned Parenthood and his wife Cherie has been involved with "Catholics for a Free Choice."
Now of course the history of the Catholic Church certainly contains some notable Catholics who were rather dicey at first who later became Saints and when it comes to England you can easily think of Saint Thomas Becket. Tony Blair without his repudiation of what he has done in the past and the recent past, bringing him into the Church when he was not yet in Communion with the Church would certainly cause scandal.
The issue of becoming a permanent Deacon is a another issue. For one I think it is generally a mistake to bring any convert to the Church immediately into such a role. St. Paul certainly touches on this and some diocese I believe do have a requirement of already being in the Church at least five years before any such consideration and then of course there would be a period of study for at least three years.
Mr Blair is reported as asking his confidant Father Timothy: "Would this be possible?" He was told: "It usually takes two or three years", to which he replied: "The fact that I’m PM, could this make a difference?"
The deacon idea emerged in a conversation a few years ago about Mr Blair’s plans after he leaves office.
Father Timothy suggested that taking on a formal role in the Church could give him fresh moral clout when he campaigns on climate change and Africa.
If this report is an any way accurate the idea of a former P.M. getting special treatment does not exactly bode well for the Diaconate which simply means servant.

Hey, maybe he is having a change of heart and is wanting to deepen his faith and faithfullness. Maybe it would also provide him with a good opportunity to outlive his wife significantly, practice celibacy in a nice, basic monastery as penance for all those sins. Who knows but I do hope that he is amde to do some deep studies and grow spiritually (we all need to) instead of just having a wand waved over his head as he leaves office.

I’m hoping that report is inaccurate. If it were a true conversion we’d get to celebrate, but Tony Blair were ordained a deacon while retaining that bundle of dissenting beliefs, that would be awful. I think there’s something fishy about this article, esp the he said/he said between Blair and Fr Timothy. Fishy as in rumor, hearsay, gossip, presumption, etc. Or even a parting joke?
if the Church denies him the diaconate in the regular manner, will he join the old ladies with the rainbow stoles in their boat for ordination?
I never trust rumors in the papers, but let’s at least consider a more charitable reading of the reported words: “The fact that I’m PM, could this make a difference?” could well mean “Would my former political role make the Church less likely to ordain me?” instead of a plea for accelerated ordination. Just a possibility.
I think that he should follow the same procedure to become a deacon as anyone else.
Who knows how much truth is in this story…
This is the first time I read your Blog, I heard about you on the Saintcast last week…and I listened the interview Paul did…Congratulations for your Blog! Your article about Tony Blair is really amazing…And if the facts are correct, may our Lord keeps HIS path to conversion SINCERE!

The role of a deacon is to act as Christ Servant in the world. The reference to getting clout from being ordained does not fit.
Dear Anders,
I understood that statement in the same manner.
Hello there Luisa, welcome to the site. I hope you enjoy your stay.
As for the Prime Minister, I suppose we are lucky that there is even a Roman Catholic Church in England to begin with. The Royal Family since the days of King Henry have tried to get rid of it there.
As for allowing him to become a deacon, I’m not so sure on that one. I don’t know if his beliefs are merely political as a means of political survival of him and the Labor Party, or he really believes in that stuff. I don’t know the man well enough to render a judgement either way, then again, there is no such thing as only being a Catholic on sundays.
The Press is famous for the stories it makes up so any quote from Tony or anyone else should be questioned. There is no doubt however that Tony has some interest in the Catholic Church but very much as a modernist. He and Cherie invited Hans King to dinner once, so a dissenting catholic he would most certainly be. But since the matter is left to the judgement of the bishops of England I could certainly see him a deacon in record time. Who knows we could see the return ofthe good old days when like St Thomas of Canterbury the right person could go from layman to bishop in one day. Our bishops could make him a deacon over their morning coffee.
Maybe when Mr. Blair meets our Beloved Pope, Benedict XVI will straighten him out.
Like he straightened out Tony’s wife, Cherie “I just participated in a gay wedding” Blair (scroll down). Right. Sorry, it just doesn’t work like that.
But Stubblespark, who asks to be a deacon before he converts? There’s the part that makes this sound silly to me.
Well, “Prime Minister” is basically Latin for “First Servant”.
Not that this has much to do with anything… I just like to spread Latin factoids. 😉
