Mar. 16, 2007 (CWNews.com) – A noted Italian Church historian has denounced the opposition of the Catholic Church to the legal recognition of civil unions, and blasted Pope Benedict XVI (bio – news), saying that the current Pontiff is “worse than Pius XII.”
Giusepp Alberigo told the newspaper Corriere della Sera that Pope Benedict is afraid of modernity, “like a child who during the night is afraid of a ghost– when in reality there is no ghost, but only a shadow.”
In an article summarizing reactions to the release of the Pope’s apostolic exhortation on the Eucharist, Sacramentum Caritatis, the historian charged that the Pontiff is trying to roll back the progress initiated by Vatican II. “It is a restoration that cancels a century of Church history,” he said. Alberigo argued that “it is difficult to find cohesion between magisterial documents and the spirit of the Second Vatican Council.”
I think it is pretty funny for a historian to basically charge someone for living in the past. This historian is afraid of the Holy Ghost who he would try to turn into nothing but a shadow. Because this is is what anybody who refers to the "spirit" and not the documents of Vatican II is doing. I think this historian needs The Rite of Exorcism for the Spirit of Vatican II.
Update: Fr. Seraphim Beshoner, TOR in the comments reminds me that this is the same historian who was "shocked" that the Pope would allow people to disagree on his upcoming book on Jesus and actually thought that this affected Papal Infallibility.

You have a typo in the title (the Pope’s “number”)…
“in reality there is no ghost, but only a shadow.
Maybe the dear man will wake up one day and realize that people who enthusiastically hail every whim of modernity are rather like those who are balancing on the window sill and telling their mother (=the Church), who is desperately urging them to come down: “Oh, but I’m completely safe heeeeeeeee….”
It is interesting to read this in light of this post by Zadok about Alberigo in November of last year.

How can restoring things to pre-Vatican II (which isn’t what the Holy Father is trying to do, anyway) cancel “a century of Church history”? The Vatican II changes all happened during my lifespan!
I say that people like Mr. Alberigo are too dumb to look at the sky at night, see all the stars and the inconceivable size of our universe, and realize the stupidity of pretending to tell the Creator (which by definition makes Him even bigger) that He should change His rules because we want Him to.
Perhaps Giusepp Alberigo is somewhat right! Pope Benedict sees that in modernity, there is no (Holy) Ghost, but only a Shadow (of Sin).
Just another reason to believe that Vatican II was uncatholic and indeed spurned by the Modernists, condemned by every Pope before John XXIII and embraced fully by every pope since then which makes one search for the nearest traditional Catholic Parish
John, how could every pope before John XXII condemn Vatican II. Weren’t they dead by that time? 😉
I’m sure there are plenty of disgruntled traditionalists out there who would be glad to point out just how thoroughly Benedict XVI congrues with Vatican II. 🙂
Just goes to show that you just can’t make everybody happy.
Firstly,as a historian he should know better, declaring one person (who is still alive) better than someone else in the past is silly and not to mention bad history. Secondly, he needs to do a little more research on the Vatican during Pius XII papacy. Urgh. These arguments against Pius XII are so stupid they become nauseating.
