With only two days to go before its opening night, a play to be staged by a gay and lesbian students’ society at NUI Galway had to be pulled yesterday after organisers received notice from entertainment conglomerate Disney threatening legal action if the production went ahead.
Members of the university’s GigSoc were in final rehearsals for a production "loosely adapted" from the Disney film Sister Act, which was to debut at the Black Box Theatre in Galway tomorrow after six months of preparatory work.
But yesterday afternoon, in a letter sent via a Dublin-based solicitor, Disney informed the students that the performance would breach its intellectual property rights and threatened legal proceedings if the play went ahead, according to GigSoc.
As one homosexual site comments.
It is the right, some would argue the responsibility, of gay men to dress up as nuns at some point. How dare the evil Disney Corp. try to interfere? Mockery of the Catholic Church is what gays love.

Yep, gotta love that open minded, tolerant, diversity enhanced, inclusive, all embracing acceptance of the progressive secular left.
In a perfect world the souls of Daughters of Charity would rise from their graves like Valkryie and administer some much needed corporal punishment to the half-wits in charge.
While I know Disney is no friend to the Church it’s ironic to see that in this case Mammon prevented yet another display of religious intolerance.
Consider it a mark of distinction that you have your own private troll (I wouldn’t feed him though).
That said, wasn’t Walt Disney himself Catholic?
I would say that the company at least cares to defend its “family-friendly” image from such folks.
Disney is known for being especially protective about their copyrights, etc. They have the money to protect themselves against infringement, and they do it. I wouldn’t read more than that into their response, here.
If this were a Kindergarten class doing a Disneyesque version of “Beauty and the Beast” a Disney rep. would stop the production or demand that Disney references be eliminated from the production.
Joanne,
A guy my wife went to college with later went to work for Disney, the stories he told about not only Disney’s territorialism but also their willingness to use other people’s ideas, (compare the present Mickey Mouse Clubhouse to Dora the Explorer or Handy Manny to Bob the Builder), boggle the mind. Truly capitalism in a pure form.
Melody,
I hope you weren’t accusing me of being a troll my initial comment was meant to be sarcastic.
Chief,
Sorry I haven’t been around for a while, hope all is well with you. (I did get selected on the OCS board, BTW.)
I’m a little disappointed that you didn’t title it “Sister Axed…”
Works on a lot of levels.
That second quote is almost (five years ago I would have said definitely) too wacky to be believable. Someone please let me know if there’s a rebuttal from a sympathetic mainstream source pointing out that this kind of talk doesn’t really help the cause.
Anthony-
The troll comment was directed at Hoodlum, but his comment was apparently deleted.
Let’s all give up on Disney and watch anime instead… Ever heard of “Kimba the White Lion”?
“It is the right, some would argue the responsibility, of gay men to dress up as nuns at some point. How dare the evil Disney Corp. try to interfere? Mockery of the Catholic Church is what gays love.”
That pretty much says it all.
Melody, Walt Disney was a Presbyterian I believe.
Also, I think that the quote from the “homosexual site” is probably a joke of some kind…probably meant to make fun of the kind of gay people who do love mockery of the Church.
Anyway, I went to NUIG for a semester. I took one of my exams at the Black Box theatre, it’s right near where I lived when I was over there. Most of the nuns I saw when I was there were more of the “consecrated religious women” category than the “actually gay men mocking the church” type. It’s too bad this kind of stuff is happening there…but good that the thing did get shut down.
“Mockery of the Catholic Church is what gays love.”
This is seconded only by mockery of themselves. Sad.
