ATLANTA (BP)– Former Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton have proposed the establishment of a broadly inclusive alternative Baptist movement to counter what they called a negative image of Baptists and to address poverty, the environment and global conflicts.
Carter and Clinton kicked off their plans with a news conference Jan. 9 at the Carter Center in Atlanta, flanked by leaders of moderate Baptist groups including the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, a breakaway group of an unverified number of churches that objected to the election of conservative leaders in the Southern Baptist Convention. Carter and Clinton announced a “Celebration of a New Baptist Covenant,” tentatively set for Jan. 30-Feb. 1, 2008, at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, which they hope will attract 20,000 Baptists.

An alternative to the Southern Baptist conference? I wonder what they will call it? Perhaps "Way Southern Baptist", that is they are so way South that they can smell sulfur.

It was among Baptists that I met people who treated “saved through grace” as a type of Get-Out-Of-Jail-Free card, so that they considered various sins to be wiped clean. I wonder if these types of people are among the planners of this new church.
Wonderful, Cafeteria Baptists.
That’s so sad it wrapped right back around to being funny again. These two just don’t know when to stop, do they?
Henry VIII and Bill Clinton–two “Defenders of the Faith ” who couldn’t keep their pants on. Now Clinton wants to do to Baptists what Henry did to the Church in England–pervert their teachings to justify one’s own moral perversions.
How do these people expect others to take Christianity seriously when they themselves don’t?
Hmmm… The Democratic Baptist Church–where politicians go to be saved. Or maybe they’re working for political salvation–this way, their associates can get the Christian votes without joining an established Church!
Who was it that observed that Baptists are the ones who don’t recognize each other at the liquor store or Hooters?
Get 5 protestants together and inevitably 2 or 3 protest the protest.
Wonderful. Hillary looked like such a hypocrite with her little cross jewelry that they decided to make up a church so she can safely call herself “Christian”. This will do wonders for her poll ratings. And when she takes office she can proudly proclaim her denomination: First Southern Baptist Moderate Church of Christianity Twice Removed.
I predict it will fall apart once they try to come up with solid positions on the issues. You know, the whole unity thing that Christ thought would be good for His Church…
“Get 5 protestants together and inevitably 2 or 3 protest the protest.”
Reminds me of the old joke from my communist days – put 2 trotskyites in a room & you’ll have three communist parties! It’s the same way with the Protestants, yet somehow, they don’t seem to have noticed yet.
HOw about!
The NUT Job Conference of Numskull Baptist.
Cater provided the NUTS and Bill, Well you know, it was the ORAL office when he was there!
Such an organization already exists, they’re called Unitarian Universalists or Jesuits for short.
Can I apply for a secretary position?
Y’all…the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship has been around for at least a decade…they broke when the Fundamentalists took over the Southern Baptist Convention through their seminaries. It was over Biblical interpretation, not ethical issues. They are basically Baptists who aren’t creationists. CBF is closer to a Catholic method of interpretation of the Bible that the Southern Baptists are…so, could we chill a bit?
Have a good weekend….
StubbleSpark,
Hilary is a Methodist (the Communist Party at prayer, as I’ve heard them referred to!)not a Baptist.
I do not think she is even Christian, Jovan (which was kind of my point).
Clinton who? Carter who?
