Last year I decided to create my own Advent Wreath graphic instead of just using the normal animated gif that I used previously Same as last year if you would like it for your own blog you can use the html code below which uses some homepage server space that won’t effect the bandwidth for my blog. I will replace the graphic each week so that it correctly shows the number of candles that should be lit. On Christmas I will change it to another graphic I created for Christmastide.
If you need the graphic at a smaller size use the following dimensions in the width and height tags.
Reduction

Width

Height

75% | 128 | 142 |
50% | 85 | 95 |
Additionally underneath my Advent graphic on my left side I have created a JavaScript that gives a countdown to Christmas. If you want to do the same thing you can insert this script into your blog template with the following code underneath where you place the graphic.
Update: Due to reader suggestions I modified the JavaScript code due to a spelling error and a bug. Though maybe since this is a Christmas related script it should be called a Bah, Humbug.

Thanks! I put it up on my Advent page.
Thanks a bunch. I put the graphic on my myspace.
Cool. Thank you.
Very cool! I may put one or both on my parish web site. I just want to point out though that you have a typo in the Christmas message. It says, “Merry Christmas, Chirst is Born!” I’m not sure exactly who “Chirst” is…. 🙂
Also, the count seems to be off by a day. Today is December 3, but it shows 23 days until Christmas. This seems to imply that Christmas is on December 26. However, maybe it’s a time zone issue, since right now it’s about 2:00 a.m. in my time zone, and I’m not sure which time zone the server is in which is calculating today’s date. So I’ll check it later today to see if it’s still off. But for now, taking out the “+ 1” in the statement “days = Math.round(days) + 1;” seems to work.
I made a few modifications to the javascript code, to correct the number of days (at least I think I corrected it), and to set it so that it continues displaying “Merry Christmas; Christ is born!” even beyond Christmas Day. Anyone interested in my modifications can find them on my parish’s web site:

Just do a “view source” to look at the source code on any of the pages.
Thank you–I am using your graphic on my faith formation site!
Have a blessed and soul-searching Advent and the most spiritual Christmas ever.
In Christ’s peace and joy,
Robin
Thanks, Jeff–very nice.
These are great … thanks Jeff!
Oh Goodie! I was hoping you would do this again this year. Thanks Jeff!
Thanks Jeff! I was actually able to get it to work this year! (Look at me…I’m a geek!)
Thanks for the graphic!
God bles,
Dom
Thanks, Jeff! Its up on my site.
Kelly, I’m so proud of you! lol
I’ll get it on my site today.
With all the comments I made before, I neglected to say thanks, Jeff. So thank you very much for making this available!
Thanks a lot! I added this to my blog! God Bless!
Jeff,
Thanks for the graphics and the code, it’s much appreciated.
Just one question: How come it now says 20 days until Christmas when it’s 21 days? It said 21 days this morning. I don’t know why it says 20 days this afternoon. Anyone have any ideas? God Bless!
Dear Jeff,
I am probably the only person on the planet who wishes the waving Pope had stayed on the blog. The candles are nice, but the Pope was an important catechetical tool for our family. Here’s my bizarre story.
My husband and I have started reading your blog as we journey toward Rome (we’re in RCIA after being Episcopalians for most of our lives). Our third child, 18-month-old Abby, loves your site because she wants to wave at the waving Pope. She is learning to talk, and crows “PO!” triumphantly whenever she sees that image. When today I went to look for the waving Pope to amuse her, she cried when the pope did not wave. (I pointed her to the image of Pope John Paul II at the top of the page, but it just wasn’t the same.)
Please also reveal the code for the waving Pope, or our family may not make it to Christmas. Thanks!
In Christ,
Laura
Thanks Jeff!
Laura,
Go to Google and cache the old page. The Pope is still waving there.
Bless you and your family Laura. Your daughter sounds adorable.
I found the pic here: http://72.14.253.104/search?q=cache:9EVqw244AakJ:www.splendoroftruth.com/curtjester/archives/005678.php+Curt+Jester&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=2
Thanks for fixing the Bah Humbugs!
Thank you for the Advent Wreath. I’ve posted it at my site. Also, thank you for letting me know about the candy cane folklore.
God bless you,
Peace
