ROCKVILLE CENTRE, New York: Two women were arrested after they chained themselves to the front doors of a Catholic diocese building to protest the authorized killing of deer on church property.
"We’re appealing to members of the diocese who respect God’s teachings of love and compassion of all creatures to halt the inhumane deer killing," Deirdre Guelke, a Hunter College student from Queens, said in a statement before her arrest.
Guelke and Therese Ferreira chained themselves to the entrance of the Diocese of Rockville Centre offices to protest the deer cull at the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception and in Caumsett State Historic Park.
A marksman with a shotgun has been hunting the deer because of an increase in the number of car accidents and near misses with the animals on local roads. The deer meat has been used to stock a food pantry.

I admit I posted this story just for the blog title.
Jay notices the irony that the women protesting the deer kill attends Hunter College.
Today Jimmy Akin rightly criticizes a X-Men – Star Trek: Then Next Generation crossover novel mentioned one of my favorite film shorts Bambi Meets Godzilla.

Ohh Man! One of my favorite shorts of all time! I’ve only seen it ONCE many many years ago and it always stuck in mind.
A marksman with a shotgun? Aren’t those mutually exclusive?
I guess maybe he’s using slugs but still….
In some heavily populated areas, hunters are only allowed to use slugs in shotguns- rifle bullets travel too far and too fast.
And one of the women is Dierdre.
Check this out from Catholic Men’s Quarterly:

Fathers, Sons, and Hunting

The cartoon will be a must-see for my son in a few years…
Genesis 1:28….”fill the earth and subdue it; and have DOMINION over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.”
A shotgun? Real men use a cannon! See http://www.buckstix.com/howitzer.htm
Dominion does not mean cruelty. Animals are God’s creatures. Really, WWJD? Certainly not take a gun shooting living, feeling animals when there are certainly more humane ways of dealing with the problem.
Actually, there aren’t “more humane ways to deal with the problem”. For smaller animals, there’s always trapping (oops, using metal traps is illegal in most ultra-progressive states), but the problem of animal overpopulation is one that can’t be addressed by simply moving animals back out to some park somewhere. They go where the food is, and if the “wilderness” is too crowded, they come into cities.
There’s a little thing called “carrying capacity” that the animal “rights” crowd always ignores. Hunters are actually active “wildlife managers”!
Indeed, hunters deserve more respect. They pay good money for licenses, then act as wildlife managers for the rest of this, and in return, they have to deal with all kinds of verbal badmouthing and abuse, and a government that takes the money they pay for their hunting licenses and uses it to restrict their ability to hunt.
As far as “living, feeling animals”, need I remind you that animals lack souls. They are material beings, not spiritual ones.
Anyway, I’m sure animals “feel” worse dying of disease or starvation than they do dying from a quick gunshot that kills instantly.
