Paul Camarata of the excellent SaintCast show today has an interview with Archbishop Chaput. Right click to download it or even better if you haven’t already subscribed to the SaintCast go here. The interview was quite interesting and I especially enjoyed the Archbishop’s comments on St. Francis. Especially where it annoys him when children take St. Francis as a confirmation name just because of his love of animals. Unfortunately that is what St. Francis has been distilled down to losing most of his essence. First and foremost he was a lover of Christ. He imaged Christ and was truly In Persona Christi without ever becoming a priest.
Today I am listening to St. Francis by G.K. Chesterton. I convert texts on the internet via TextAloud a very good Text-To-Speech engine. I love the way Chesterton narrows in on St. Francis and goes way beyond historical details to the very heart of this great saint. One of my favorite quotes on St. Francis is from his book on St. Thomas Aquinas.
It is an old story that, while we may need somebody like Dominic to convert the heathen to Christianity, we are in even greater need of somebody like Francis, to convert the Christians to Christianity.
Dwight Longenecker has nominated me as an honorary Franciscan. Well he got the fool part right. And if St. Francis is the jongleur de Dieu…the juggler of God, as he says; I can at least juggle three balls which I taught myself to be able to do to audition for a part in a play. I don’t t have St. Francis love of poverty, but I am a poor sinner. Luckily us poor sinners are rich in mercy.
