A vacation in Italy turned tragic for a local archbishop and two fellow priests over the weekend.
Baltimore’s Cardinal William Keeler is recovering in the hospital after getting in a car accident while vacationing outside of Rome.
The 75-year-old suffered a broken ankle when a car struck the passenger side of the car he was riding in with two other priests in the town of Terni.
Father Bernard Quinn, a retired priest from Pennsylvania, was killed in the crash. He was sitting in the backseat.
Monsignor Thomas Smith, pastor of a church in Pennsylvania, was driving the car. He broke several ribs.
The Catholic Church says both Keeler and Smith are making plans to return to Baltimore and Pennsylvania later this week. All three men were friends and often vacationed together.

Cardinal Keeler is a prince of the church, and a good one at that, but Father Quinn was a true prince among men and a priest’s priest. I will pray for the good cardinal as he grieves because I doubt Father Quinn needs prayers. Heaven is a better place for his being there.
I didn’t know Fr. Quinn, but I daresay we should pray for him too! I’m sure it would have been his wish, and since you don’t think he will need them, I’m sure you at least agree that the prayers would still not be wasted.
FR.Quinn was our Pastor for 8 years at St. Vincent de Paul parish. What a blessing to all. He was the most holy, spiritual, and intelligent, man I have ever known. He will be missed by many. We are certainly a community in mourning.
