Catholic Church Conservation often finds the wackiest liturgies in Europe and his latest post takes the cake. The cover of an official Austrian Catholic Youth magazine seems like a parody indistinguishable from teen magazines. The pictures from the KEY2LIFE Mass have to be seen to be believed, especially the couple involved in "active participation."
You have got to be kidding me

I’m scared to look. SOmeone tell me when I can open my eyes.
No, no, no, not another feel-good, wishy-washy “liturgy” please. And what’s with the bright color theme that distracts the congregation from the central event. Oh wait, this isn’t a congregation, and there is no central event to speak of that’s worth watching. (Would the consecration even be valid? I shudder at the thought of the great possibility of an accident or sacrilege overcoming Our Lord in such a high-risk open-air setting.) And that is supposed to be the new official garb of the lay priesthood now, I suppose.
Those are pretty weird pictures, but the “Bronx Brothers” are the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, and they are about as orthodox as it comes. So I would withhold judgement. Just a suggestion…
So where were:
(a) the clowns (at least, those dressed as such)?
(b) the female clergy?
(c) the liturgical dancers?
Maybe there’s a divine limit on how much cr~p you can actually pack into a single Eucharist.
It does, however, raise the bar to a level Anglicans may have a hard time beating. I have no doubt, however, that they will rise to the challenge.
Does BXVI know about this??? Someone should pull his coat.
I bet Jesus was there.
These appear to be different events? I mean, the one with the lay reader standing behind the flimsy table/altar with the boom microphone and doesn’t look like the same event as the one with the Franciscan Friars (that looks more like a concert than a mass).
There is nothing wrong with a “field Mass” – they’re obviously out and about on the outskirts of Vienna (I am Viennese). The goofy outfits, not exactly blasphemy. The concert is a separate event. While I wouldn’t attend, there’s nothing wrong with having a Christian Pop concert. It’d be great if they kept the concerts and Mass separate, which doesn’t happen in many of these events, where a concert is wrapped around a Mass, complete with light shows. They are successful, it’s just that liturgy and show should be separated. I’m guessing they’re trying to fit in the Mass since the kids wouldn’t otherwise go.
I have to agree with Gerald. The people lounging were clearly outside the areas set aside for Mass. The microphone setup may also have been injudicious, but the fact that the priests are talking to eachother has in all likelyhood to do with some practical matter of celebrating the Mass – who is doing what, where. I’m am sure they aren’t discussing the soccer game. (The bishop’s master of ceremonies does a _lot_ of talking during a Mass.)
