When Dale Price fisks it is a thing of beauty. A verbal slugfest with no rope-a-dope subtlety. His target is Fr. Larson’s critique of the Mass on EWTN which I noted previously.
SF author S.M. Stirling also commented on his post. Dale had previously reviewed his book Dies the Fire and the author had commented on his review. I finally got around to reading that book myself last week based on Dale’s recommendation. I just wish I hadn’t waited over a year to get to it. Though at least it means I can now read the second in the series (The Protector’s War)and won’t have to wait long for third one (A Meeting in Corvallis) to be released in September.

I’m going to have to read those books! I studied at Mt. Angel Seminary, so I know the monks there. I’m sure more than a few of them would be flattered to be known as the “warrior monks of Mt. Angel” (S.M. Stirling’s description in Dale Price’s combox). Hmm…they’re not on Audible, so I guess I’ll have to get the dead-tree editions.
Yikes! Mr. Price’s reaction is horrifying. While I may be able to appreciate his disagreement with Father Larson, the tone of the piece is reprehensible. If the best defense of traditional catholic worship is a decidedly anti-christian and vicious personal attack we are in terribly sad shape. Certainly Father Larson’s opinions can be debated, but the undisputably nasty insinuations about his character have no resemblance to anything a christian would say. I make no judgement about Mr. Price’s subjective guilt, but it is objectively sinful to publish such vile attacks. Mr. Price has done much more to damage his own cause than he thinks Father Larson did to his cause. Is there a possibility for honest and civil discussion here, or is the blogosphere just going to become a place of anti-productive hostility?
Jeff:
Thanks muchly for the hat tip.
And for the record: David loses his shyness about subjective guilt in his comment on my blog. Apparently, he can read my subjective guilt now.
I think this how anyone would react when, a generation later, they find themselves on the business end of a fully loaded grass-roots movement.
