Fr. Rob has an interesting post called "Does the Vatican II Generation Have to Die For the Council to Be Implemented?" He makes some good points and it isn’t all pessimistic. Not surprising since historically the implementation of councils have always been turbulent.
Waiting for a generation to pass

As I just said at Fr. Rob’s:
My father (68 this year, Notre Dame class of ’60) has said many times over the last 15 years, “My whole generation is going to have to die out before things really get better in the Church.” (He often inserts a “damn” between “whole” and “generation”.) He thinks my generation, and then especially those who are just children and teenagers now, will really implement the Council.
He’s not being a pessimist. He just thinks many (most?) Catholics his age are majoring on the minors (see: VOTF, etc.). They were told certain things in the ’50’s and ’60’s and are disappointed that it didn’t all come true.
We don’t have to wait for them to die, really. We just need to fire the bishops and replace them 40 year-olds who know their stuff.
Moses never entered his promised land either!
I’ve observed recently that among younger priests and seminarians there is an interesting reaction to the spewings of Hippie Priests. When Fr. Clown starts in about women priests and Call to Action and an elected Papacy, the guys whisper under their breath: “Ticktockticktockticktock…”
