Well one thing for sure Cardinal-designate Levada is not quite as capable as Cardinal Ratzinger was when he was the prefect of the CDF. Read these ten question Time magazine put to him and try to imagine then-Cardinal Ratzinger answering any of them like that. Here are just some of the examples that stick out.
The Roman Catholic Church is akin to an absolute monarchy. should the Vatican be more democratic? The question presumes that there is not open discussion in the Vatican. The Pope expects us to give him our best insights. You must remember that, yes, this is a monarchy, but the monarch is elected.
The Church is only a monarchy in the sense that Jesus is King and head of the Church. The Church is really a sacred hierarchy (rule by high priest) where of course Jesus is that high priest with Peter’s successor being the head of the episcopal college.
You raised the issue in the synod about whether politicians should be granted communion if they support policies counter to Church teachings. There are certain teachings that as Catholics we have to accept as part of Jesus’ Gospel. When you see Catholic politicians who favor abortion rights … you have to ask yourself how this person squares this with his personal faith. Catholic politicians need to take this seriously. Maybe they need to say I’m not able to practice my faith and be a public representative.
What you can’t practice your faith and be a public representative? All I can say is that I hope his replies were not written answers in response to questions. Maybe they called him before he had his first cup of coffee.

You have to admit – being faithful to the Church’s Magisterium may not be representative of the public that makes up these policitians’ consituencies. I’m thinking (hoping) His Eminence meant it in that way. But you’re right, Jeff – I cringed when I read that.
Really, though, his first answer displayed a not-unbecoming sense of humor.
Face it Curto Jesto,
He’s not Ratzinger! That’s good. God doesn’t make doubles.
Love thy Cardinal for himself. God does.
Ha ha ha.
Don’t start that election crap either. The ’08 election crap is about to start and don’t be a base border.
You know you are one if:
All you see is the upper stupid scrupulous stuff like that we saw in the 04 election. For the likes of me, I didn’t care if Kerry wore a ski suit. It didn’t matter.
WELL BROTHERS AND SISTERS IT LOOKS VERY WELL LIKE NO ONE … AND I SHOUT TO HIGH HEAVEN NO ON DID ANYTHING ABOUT YOUR FIVE NON NEGOTIABLE POINTS.
Face it, they lied. Maybe we should refuse them for breaking the ten Commandments too.
This is a matter of confession. Only their priest knows for sure. Really.
Get them for lying first. Then refuse everyone of the Republican party for lying to us about the FIVE NON NEGOTIABLE POINTS.
BLAST ZONE. BOOM.
Remember the politicians have every intention of lying to us again.
Why not have one unforgivable sin? Lying!
Lay off the others, freak em out about lying will take care of all of them.
We are not going down the five non negotiable point road of deception with me during the 08 election.
Don’t even try it.
Lousers! Who let THAT cat out of the bag?
You narrow minded people.
Cut it out. Save it.
He is NOT the Pope. But listen, why not throw snow on the base boards of your house. Maybe then you can see the wall you put up.
God still loves him. Are you still loving?
Actually, throwing snow on the outerwalls of your house improves insulation in the crawlspace….
But I don’t understand the “five non-negotiable points” reference. What do you mean, Jeanne?
