I was thinking more about Dawn Eden’s latest post on PP’s merchandise and specifically this item.
I had commented on her site "Now as for me keeping my Rosary off their ovaries – no problem. I can’t thinks of any conceivable circumstance where that could happen anyway. I mean be serious."
Later I was thinking abut what kind of mind set would come up with this anyway. It seems obvious by the creator of this and those who like this bumper sticker that they seem to be bothered by those who would pray Rosaries outside of abortion mills. Why is that? I mean if I was an abortion supporter and either believed that God approved of abortion or didn’t believe in God at all why would I care if somebody prayed the Rosary? In these circumstances wouldn’t I be pleased that pro-lifers were wasting there time doing something? If God approves of abortion their prayer and time was wasted. If you believe there is no God then again they are wasting there time. A bunch of pro-lifers wasting there time should be seen as optimum by abortion supporters. If they are bothered by seeing people praying perhaps they at some level sense the efficacy of this prayer. To paraphrase Shakespeare – Me thinks they doth protest too much.

I’ve seen this bumper sticker for sale; it struck me much the same as it did you: a shocking expression of raw, unthinking hatred and hypocritcal intolerance for people’s quiet expressions of their loving religious faith.
I was actually shaken by it physically.
What kind of hate inspires this sort of expression? I don’t usually use this word, but “demonic” is all I can think of.
Just stand on the side of the road with a rosary or pro-life placard and see what kind of venomous language will whip past you at 45 MPH. It matters not that there are children around either (I suppose that’s because children don’t matter – you know, being mere post-natal tissue mass and all).
I am inspired to similar reflections by Jews objecting to prayers at Auschwitz or posthumous baptisms by Mormons. Do they believe there is a Christian heaven and a Jewish heaven and people can be “kidnapped” into the wrong heaven by acts they presumably are supposed to believe have no effect?
Or the Secular Humanist Declaration’s statement that it is “immoral” to baptize children (but apparently, not to circumcize them.) I am still waiting for these situationists to explain how I was harmed by it.

Reminds me of the scene in Constantine where John Constantine is standing over the half breed demon trying to extract information, and he begins the last rites to absolve the demon if all his sins.
He says: “A demon in heaven… I’d like to be a fly on that wall”.
When the demon finally spills his guts, Constantine admits: “Oh by the way, you have to ask for forgiveness”. 😉
There was a lot of interesting theology in that movie in addition to occult and special effects.
Speaking from experience, I can say that when the abortionists and their staff see us outside of their death chamber praying the rosary they feel threatened. They have told us that when we are out there praying the rosary it “intimidates the women and they don’t want to go in.” (Hey — that’s the reason why we’re there, people.) They are the ones who create these signs, not the women who go in. Some women (and men) are happy that we’re there praying for them and end up not going through with it — we call these “turnarounds”.
Others react differently and usually the male who accompanies them gives us the finger or shouting something nasty and we play Whoopie Goldberg and respond with “God bless you” or just ignore them, depending on the situation.
The sign makes me laugh — it’s utterly ridiculous. The pro-death people are really freaked out by our rosaries because they know the power of prayer. The way they view it is we’re taking away their business when we get our rosaries out. In reality, it is the abortionists and staff who are intimidated by us.
The “stay away from my ovaries” crowd is the same crowd that criticizes women who have large families (like the mother of 16 in Arkansas or the mother of 17 in California).
Somehow, the “ovaries” are private property so long as they aren’t actually creating life…
If they hadn’t put so many decades on that rosary, perhaps they would have had room for a large crucifix.
I agree, it amazing what people “don’t believe”, but react on it.
Just like Fulton Sheen said. “Atheism is not a doctrine but a cry of wrath”.
Well, I guess their reactions to the Rosary is a kind of proof. If it wasn’t for real, if it didn’t work, if it wasn’t TRUE, then why would they have that reaction?
I was born in a Jewish hospital (I won’t tell you how many years ago!). I had to go to the NICU because I was so small and my parents were fearful I wouldn’t live. My mother (who was/is Catholic) told me a rabbi had regularly came to the ward to pray for the critically ill babies — without asking the mothers. My mother found this to be a comfort, not a threat or insult. She said I needed all the prayers I could get. I mention it because I think it’s analogous.
Pro-choicers like that “rosaries off my ovaries” because it #1)Profanes what is sacred to us, which they feel justified in doing because we’ve “profaned” what is sacred to them — opposing the killing the unborn. #2) It’s a clever rhyme that really does effectively stick in your head. They fancy that, if they have capably come up with an effective rhyme or jingle, they MUST be smarter folk than those “religious nuts.”
By the way, I am eager to know if anyone has an example of pro choicers praying for a mass conversion of pro lifer’s hearts to embrace abortion. Since, to their way of thinking, abortion is a great good, and Jesus instructs us to pray for our enemies, does it not logically follow that they would pity our embrace of evil as we do they? For the record, I would not be at all threatened or offended if they did so because God will answer their prayers… although, as we were often told as children… it might not be the answer they were looking for! ; )
I pray for the conversion of all hearts to Christ — the mother seeking an abortion as well as those prompting her and those providing it.
I do not pray for harm to come to them, although, I admit I have entertained the idea of God sending down a simultaneous lightening bolt on all the abortion clinics when no one is there.
And then they’d have to declare to the insurance companies that their clinic was destroyed by “an Act of God.”
(sorry for rambling, I’ve been away awhile!)
I know why they have no cross on the rosary: Ambivalent Christians would be outraged to have that symbol featured in a mocking bumpersticker. Also, the extra decades are supposedly an “out” – like the ones made by retailers in the ’80s when “punk” kids thought sacrilege was so cool. “It’s not a REAL rosary.”
Frankly, I’m fuming that my tax money is funding insults to religion. I’d feel the same if it were aimed at Mormons or Muslims.
I say let them keep their (or after Alito gets confirmed, I guess it will be “our”) Supreme Court off my rosary, and then we’ll talk about their blasted organs.
Where did they find a 7-decade Franciscan Rosary? Surely the inclusion of 7 decades was not in error, right?
OUR BODIES OUR WOBS or OUR WOMB OUR BODIES
I just came up with a brilliant rejoinder.
Sure your body is your body but somone has rented your womb.
Or
Your womb is yours but you have sublet it to a stranger.
Since you have sublet your womb you’ll just have to let the little bugger stay in it until the lease is up nine months from now.
Next time plug up the entry passageway so he cant get in, the damn squatter.
Any way you phrase it you have an unwelcome guest.
And this one is so persistent he wont leave until he’s good and ready. Usually takes nine months.
Tough.
Maybe unpalatable to some women but I cant see a rejoinder. Sure it’s your body your womb, but there’s somebody in it.
Aljablan revives Squatter’s Rights. I love it!
I’m not sure I find the squatter analogy very helpful – don’t property owners usually have the right to evict squatters?
I believe that’s the pro-choice argument: that the “stranger” is not their with their leave, and they can choose to evict. Too bad that means killing the “squatter”.
I wonder if these pro-choicers would otherwise be in favor of denying shelter to the homeless?
Aljablan – are you suggesting women use contraception (plugging remark) ?
Are you suggesting that rape or incest victims use contraception so they don’t get pregnant when they are violated?
Talk about faulty logic!!!!!! I think you better rethink your strategy my friend.
I took the “squatters” comment as more of a reinforcement that what they are aborting is a human being, separate from their mother, with attention to understanding that many pro-choicers insist this is not so. Many maintain that these developing humans are just “cell globules” “bit’s of flesh.”
As I recently said to my son (in whom some folks said I should have aborted): “It was not a matter of my wanting or not wanting you. You existed. Inside of me, but not me.”
