Domenico Bettinelli reports that Pope Benedict’s first encyclical will be published on January 25. I have coded a javascript encyclical countdown that now appears above my waving Papa graphic in my side bar.
Update: The encylical is available here.

Canadian mea culpa.
We are sometimes as myopic as you Yanks.
I thought all the horrors are happening here in the great white north and lo and behold I read here that Mass and Calif have abortion homosexual “”marriage””” and Oregon even worse euthanasia. Looks like you dont have to come up to Canada or go to Holland to be infected by degeneracy.
Yes now we have an academic first noise about polygamy, first decriminalise then legalise.
It gets worse the august Supreme Court of Canada
sorry I’m choking and gagging examined a sex bar in Montreal and found that wife swapping gang bangs public sex as long as its in private meets community standards. I just wonder what community their honours have been frequenting lately.
After the hooha about making sodomy a sacrament
now this. I thought it was the hallucinatory fanatsy of a paranoid right wing loonie when they mentioned next will be polygamy and wife swapping and gangbangs; they didnt have the decency to wait until after the elections, and indeed next on the agenda are these salutory derangements.
This is of course the same agenda abortion-euthanasia-sodomy as sacrament- gang bang wife swapping- public intercourse- polygamy- divorce- trial “marriage”, “civil marriage” etc.
These are all parts of the culture of death and the destruction of meaning, evacuating voiding all words of their sense meaning significance.
There is no man no woman no husband no wife no marriage, no child no male no female, no life no death (I forgot above necrophilia, buggery, )
This is a nicolaitan-cathar- manichean- determinist- predestinationist- anabaptist- new age- arian- dualist- heresy that is triumphant in the modern world.
It goes like this since we are in a state of grace, since we are divine, we are beyond sin or virtue. We may do anything, have sex with anybody any age any sex and otherwise do as we will.
Matter is evil therefore it doesnt matter what we do, the evil god will approve.
We may also kill or steal or do anything as we can do no wrong.
The definition of marriage is vague so we may call any union perverse pathological in any combination of age and sex marriage as words anyway have no meaning. (Nominalism, there is no reality behind them) Tomorrow I’ll marry that cute goat and that friendly dog, why you are against equality of species? Etc
So this deranged sinister lunatic destruction of society must be fought, but here I am preaching to the converted.
I wish someone could make sure Pope Benedict sees this encyclical countdown – I bet he’d enjoy it!
Hello.
It is said that the title of the encyclical will be “God is love” = “Deus caritas est” (not “… charitatis …”). Divine love (“agape” in Greek) is rendered as “caritas” in the nominative case in Latin. The genitive (possessive) form of “caritas” is “caritatis,” without an “h,” but the title of the encyclical would contain the nominative (“caritas”), not the genitive.
God bless you.
John
Thanks for the correction.
Has anyone else heard the rumor the title of the encyclical might be “the Christian Family”?
I just realized that the countdown only shows up on your main page….not on pages linked by live bookmarks. I will go silently back to lurkerhood.

Jeff, the word on the street is that DCE will be issued this Friday (the 25th is a Saturday, which always struck me as a strange date to release an encyclical), and we also have the alleged opening lines of DCE as well.
I’m a bit lazy today, so just go to my blog for the links… it’s today’s only post.
Well, it looks like it is the 25th… .
Nor is the 25th a Saturday, as I’d also misstated.
Wow! Oh-fer…
The 25th is Wednesday, the conclusion of the week of prayer for Christian Unity…also the Feast of Saint Paul’s Conversion.
I’m sure it’s a coincidence, but a rather cool one!
I didnt like the pedestrian title of the new encyclical at first, it just doesnt have the zing of Quadragesimo Anno, Rerum novarum, Laborem exercens, even Mater et magister which is also weak but I guess we’ll have to live with it as it’s a misquote from the Vulgate. The original is Deus est Charitas and the real original is the koine Greek I cant find my New Testaments but I guess it would be Ho Theos agapee estin, the loss of the h must be due to the modernist madness having seized the Vatican as they have now a bastard New Age Vulgate Vulgatam Novam which of course is an absurdity and which is featured on the Holy See website. This parallels nicely an ignorance of Greek shaky Latin the newer the worser. You dont rewrite classics. Result bad grammar bad rhetoric lousy logic textual incompetence and wooly theology.
We’ll just have to wait.
The idea of course is good and correct and fair
but the phrasing is pedestrian and poor Latin.
Cicero would shiver, even Augustine and Aquinas.
Truths sound truer and more persuasive when well expressed.
Maybe they should dig up Oscar Wilde and hire him as a stylist.
On the other hand the worst writer in the New Testament is a toss up. But it’s almost certainly John of Patmos, he of the Apocalypse. Of course the apocalypse sounds more apocalyptic written in horrid Greek. As Johns letters are also weak that would actually support the notion of their identity not their disjunction.
So the rough edges of barely literate writing has a certain authenticity which the most polished smooth sublimity lack.
So it has to be if it has to be Deus est Charitas.
How about Charitatem Divinitatis. That wouldnt be biblical but it would sound like the first words of an encyclical insead of a first attempt at Latin composition.
Thanks for the link in the update. I think the Pope understands very well that love conquers all things, and so hopefully this will lead all Christians back into a unity of heart, the first step in unifying our minds.

If the Pope is going to see this countdown, let’s hope and pray he also sees this website, dedicated to making .LOVE domains (TLDs) a reality on the Internet:
http://www.dotlove.org
(If any other prominent Catholics would like to get involved, that would be most helpful too!)
