I would really like to thank the bishops conference for something they have done. Last week Clayton reported on how the USCCB had told Brian Noe at Verbum Domini that he couldn’t use the NAB for his daily scripture reading podcast because it is copyrighted by the bishop’s conference. As a result this last week he has been using the Douey-Rheims instead. Now I have been listening to Brian’s podcast for the last couple of months and I really prefer hearing his rich voice using the Douey-Rheims version over the NAB. The D-R is not perfect, but it is preferable to the NAB. So to whoever the bureaucrat at the USCCB that made the decision – great job – I really appreciate it.
On another note Brian has now started his own blog Verbum Domini so welcome to St. Blogs.

You are quite right about preferring the Douay-Rheims to the NAB. The latter is embarrasingly sophomoric, does not evoke a sense of awe and wonder, and seems written by a committee of elderly junior prom planners–none of whom have a poetic cell in their body.
The Douay-Rheims can be awkward at times in its antiquated language, but posseses something intrinsically awe-inducing in its reverence for the Word of the Lord.
I am a lector at my parish and we all have to stumble along with the NAB and the introduction to the Epistles with the required “Brothers and Sisters”. That plus an assortment of Marty Haugen/David Haas elevator music can tempt one to abandon patience.

Leave it to The Curt Jester to hunt up really neat Catholic Resources. He commented about Brian Noe being denied permission to podcast the NAB for his daily Scripture reading:
Arguments about the Douay-Rheims tend to mirror the arguments from those Protestants who swear by the King James Bible.
Douay-Rheims is the only translation I could find for my Catholic Palmpilot Bible.
Also, my philosophy prof told me that Aquinas’s writings make sense only using the Douay-Rheims english.
Just a few of my random thoughts about the D-R (Democratic-Republican?)
I love Verbum Domini…what a wonderful service! I’m glad he has a blog now, thanks for the heads up!
