Archbishop Chaput is what I consider a complete bishop. His columns are always edifying and cover the range of the Gospel. His column this week is "Homelessness: Issue goes to the heart of living the Gospel."

Good column, yes.
I remember when homelessness became a critical issue in our diocese (Rochester NY) back in the late 80s. A number of parishes responded by opening shelters, then Catholic Charities opened some. Finally, the county responded, easing the situation.
Catholic Charities still runs a couple of shelters, as does the Catholic Worker movement. I know of only one parish that still has a shelter. Most closed after the government stepped in. The county now works with a network of shelters to meet the current need (mostly). But if the Church had not acted, I wonder if the county would ever have have been shamed into doing something?
Gainesville is #5 of “US Cities that are mean to the homeless”, with 1000 people on the street and camping in the woods. It is good to see this letter; I wish all bishops would address the problem. We are blessed in this diocese to have a Bishop who does.
p.s. Gainesville has two shelters: St Francis House and the Salvation Army, which together can house less than 50 people.
A hearty Amen to your opinion of Archbishop Chaput. He is, in my opinion, the best bishop in the US. (And no he is not my ordinary.)
I had the honor of being present for the installation of Bishop Chaput as bishop of the Diocese of Rapid City nearly twenty years ago and attending the Cathedral parish there.
I have since followed his ministry and found him consistant, Catholic, committed and fearless-just exactly what we need at this time. Grant

Abp. Cardinal McCarrick just passed 75 years old and offered his obligatory resignation to the Holy Father out here in Washington…
