David Morrision comments on an article that asks "Why Don’t Gay Activists Picket Mosques?" A commenter to the original article thought that it might be because of possible violence from Muslims in reaction to it. I think it goes a lot further than just that. When the Church issued via the CDF Considerations regarding proposals to give legal recognition to unions between homosexual persons there was a massive outcry in the media about homophobia. Yet when the Dalai Lama called homosexual activity "sexual misconduct" and also condemned oral and anal sex there was zero outcry. There is also no demand that the next Dalai Lama should be a women or outcries that Buddhist monks should be allowed to be married. There is I believe a back-handed compliment paid when Christianity, especially the Catholic Church, is attacked.

The enemy knows who their enemy is.
Or, for the really brave, Rainbow Sash Movement goes to Saudi Arabia 😉

Curt Jester thinks the attack on the Catholic Church in this matter is a “back-handed compliment”. I guess I could do without these compliments, since they seem countless at times! But, in a way, it’s an honor to be disliked by all the right people. …
There are throngs of self-defined “recovering Catholics” out there in the great blue countryside. still nursing affronts to their worth, meaning and dignity afflicted by the Church. Their name is legion.
It helps them to maintain their constant stance of being offended by something that the Great Roman Repression does, and allows them to find more allies in the wonderfully cynical and secularized world.
But how many disaffected and offended Tibetan Buddhists are there–Richard Gere doesn’t count?
As for disaffected Moslems, I believe that the “word is mum”. Better to nurse one’s wounds in living silence than be sentenced to the consequences of criticizing Islam with too public a voice.
Moreover, neither of the latter groups has as yet much of a public presence among our mainstream media. Pity. They might add some new perspectives on our Galloping Theocracy.
If the RSM go to Saudi Arabia and publicize their views, they’ll be beheaded by the State (seriously)or bombed by a fanatic(possibly). Which may be a very good thing ‘coz it’ll show them that our church is way better than they think. As for the Dalai Lama, why hasn’t any reporter talked to Richard Gere yet?
One reason they don’t picket mosques may be that there is no reason to do so. Pederasty is built into Islam in particular (it’s thought to strengthen the student’s dependence on the teacher), and sodomy into polygamous cultures in general. When the well-to-do take all the women for themselves, the poor find it difficult to marry. Many drift into sodomitical relationships out of frustration.
I don’t know about the teacher/student thing, but I know that Afghanistan very commonly has boys and teenage boys in sexual relationships with older men. Very openly.
Now, probably because Afghanistan and Pakistan are next to India, they also have (as in India) the groups of crossdressing men who call themselves women and take male lovers, and have some of the free-speaking privileges of clowns. They are seen as being good luck at weddings. Other Islamic countries seem to disapprove of this.
Excellent point. Made a similar one yesterday in my new blog, quoting from a “CBS News” report on the next Dalai Lama.
I think any intellegent person would be able to dissagree with others on certain points and still have a generally good opinion of them anyway.
But the case of gay-rights groups picketing Christian organizations is because they are the ones with the power. They aren’t going to be protesting at a wiccan sabbat because even if they changed the witches’ minds it wouldn’t matter. Same with the Dalai Lama.
By the way, the Dalai Lama said that in the framework of buddism, even masturbation is misconduct. But then he says that if a non-believer does these things, they don’t create violence. He seems neutral about the issue.
Nah, he’s just being nice to unbelievers. Buddhism does not have the same universalistic evangelical bent of Christianity.
A couple things:
RE: Rainbows and Brussel Sprouts – this is a serious disappointment to me! Why Rainbows? I was playing a boardgame – called Taboo – the other day with some friends, and one player had to get her teammates to identify the word “Rainbow” (without using 5-6 keywords) she immediatly turned to “its A symbol for the gays!” What a disappointment. Teresa, I think the identical puzzle pieces is a brilliant idea – and quite illustrative of the problem!
As far as (rightful) Islamic condemnation of homosexual behavior (even if their subsequent condemantion of “homosexual” persons is immoral) one wonders, with some melancholy, what things will be like in Europe in fifty years, the continent having depopulated itself through contraceptive poison, which is now warmly welcoming Muslim immigrants from points south and east. Those “wonderfully” tolerant and permissive Europeans may be regretting their “noble openness” to anything but Christianity! (One thinks of the parents of John Walker Lind on a continental scale!)
The answer is simply.. ulterior motives. Similarly, rants about “organizedreligion” are never complaining about organized Judaism, it is simply a euphemism for “Christianity”.
(Organized religion is a myth… ask anyone who has ever tried it. (s) Wm. Linden, President, New York New Church)
As Roy Schoeman points out in his book Salvation is from the Jews, not only do martyrs receive 72 *female* virgins in paradise, but 28 *male* virgins as well.
There is a reason you don’t know about this, it’s called the mainstream media.
Elinor is right about polygamy breeding (ha ha) sodomy. Another cause is the radical subjection of women, which makes it difficult for the sexes to relate on an emotional level.
Ive heard that when God destroyed the Earth with the flood, it was a punishment for sexual misconduct. So the choice of the rainbow could be understood as the devil flaunting Gods promise of never to punish the Earth by destroying it again, while at the same time committing those same sins. Has anyone else heard this interpretation?
From what I hear, the flood was punishment for many things, not just sexual misconduct.
As I was driving down the highway with my kids in tow, we went to pass a car, when one of my children said,” oooh, it has a rainbow on the bumper!” to which another said, “I’ll bet is’t a car full of lesbians!” to which I said, “What are you talking about, and no they’re not lesbians! You don’t know anything of the sort!” But the sticker on the back window said it all, ” WICCA Lesbian’s Rock!” To which my oldest son said, ” Kinda creepy huh Mom?” (oogity, boogity, yuck!)
I’m betting Jesse Jackson is a little chapped they’ve hijacked his Rainbow Push Coalition identity. I can kinda see why Jackson used a rainbow — rainbows are only about color, and by definition the prescence of all color. But rainbows for homosexuals?? Well, maybe it does make sense that I’m confused about their identity, after all… they are.
