Can anybody tell me the total number of seminarians for the Diocese of Los Angeles. I have had zero luck finding a current number via search engines and you would think it was a state secret on the diocesan web site. Other dioceses I looked at had the number of seminarians prominently displayed. I could only find the number for 1999 which was 63. Even a Tidings article which contained many statistics about priests and religious totally left out seminarians.

Don’t have the information, but I recommend you call the Archdiocese. The switchboard should be able to connect you to the right office for information. Here’s the web site:
Archdiocese of Los Angeles (California)
I took a couple of minutes of looking at the L.A. Archdiocesan Site. It led me to this site:
http://vocations.la-archdiocese.org/NewSEMINARIANS2004.pdf
While this is not a complete list, it indicates that there ain’t many seminarians. Hope this is somewhat helpful.
I called and asked, the lady was quite evasive and wouldn’t answer the question. She tried to pawn me off on someone who would mail me a vocations packet.
Hi Mr Miller,
The 2004 Catholic Directory (the big one put out by Kennedy) says that St. John’s Seminary in Camarillo has 94 students, and St. John’s Seminary College has 102 students.
I don’t know if they have students who are not seminarians. If those are all seminarians, it looks pretty good to me.
There are probably students from other dioceses there I would guess. It didn’t say how many are for LA.
A quick check located some 2001 statistics, if you believe FutureChurch, at any rate. Listed statistics for the Archiocese were 57 seminary students from its own territory, 11 of their own men in other seminaries, for a total of 68.
Having been to LA many times and attending what was supposed to be Holy Mass there a few times, I am not surprised with so few seminarians.
