Atheist activist Michael Newdow is back in the news again after his last attempt to have the "under God" phrase removed from Pledge. His suit previously was denied because the court basically said that that he couldn’t bring the suit based on his daughter since he did not have custody of her. He has rectified this by finding other parents with the same complaint so as to refile the suit.
There is something pitiful about a person spending so much time fighting against a deity they don’t believe in. A philosophy that spends all of its energy in unbelief is not exactly an inspiring philosophy. In Christian apologetics we argue for what we believe and in atheistic apologetics they argue for what they don’t believe. Atheism though is a great testament to the gift of free will that God has given us. That he can allow his own creation to deny him is a wonder. As G.K. Chesterton put it "If there were no God, there would be no atheists." Being a former atheist I can now see that there is a great sadness in being an atheist. It is like walking around in your family home and saying that you are an orphan at the same time your mother is preparing dinner for you.

The best epithet for Newdow is Mark Shea’s “human toothache”.
I think the better analogy is that being an atheist is like walking around the office believing you have no boss while he’s writing your paycheck.
