Text of Pope’s Remarks to Bush
The text of the speech does not match the headlines that preceded it such as ”
Pope To Fault Bush On Iraq” and “Pope expected to tell Bush he is wrong.” This only showed how little these journalist know about the Holy father. They wanted the Pope to give President Bush a dressing down because that is what they wanted.

Did Laghi Lie on May 13? (23 days ago)
The meeting is over and apparently the President wasn’t told to stop anything.
Islam Online had an predictable anti-American spin on this story. Of course — when Laghi criticizes violence, it is the United States that is named and not the terrori…
Nice statement by the Pope. I also sneer at those silly journalists who were expecting the Pope to dress down Bush or something to that effect. They really have no clue what this man is about. The Pope has way more class than that. If he had something unpleasant to say, he would most certainly say it in private.
The only part of the statement that bothered me was this line: “It is the evident desire of everyone that this situation now be normalized as quickly as possible with the active participation of the international community and, in particular, the United Nations organization, in order to ensure a speedy return of Iraq’s sovereignty, in conditions of security for all its people. “
What is with the Holy See’s blind faith in the United Nations? I just don’t understand it.
Maybe, after his experiences with WWII and communism, he thinks international organizations like that are useful. Imagine if there had been something like the UN after WWI, a league of nations, in a manner of speaking. Maybe they’d have been able to put a stop to Hitler and Stalin.
No, they wouldn’t have. You can’t stop someone like Hitler or Stalin with paperwork and meetings.
The Church is running scared in Europe because they have lost Europe. The UN is the Church’s successor in Europe and the Vatican wants to keep a toe in for a revival they hope will someday turn up when the UN fails to deliver, which they will in the long run.
What remains to be seen is what the Vatican will give away to belong to the almighty UN. Not much, I hope. Some of the pandering (ala Assisi, pagans at Fatima, etc.) I believe to be related to the hankering for UN recognition.

Are you being sarcastic? Its as if you really did know of the League of Nations…a UN-like group established post WWI that collapsed due to lack of American support and inability to prevent war…
Hehe. 🙂
