Oh gees! hehehe! In parishes in my neighborhood, we have the opposite problem. We have kids that DON’T dress up. They were dirty jeans, sneakers, and t-shirts. YUCK!
I’m Italian and First Communion is such an important day in our lives that I still like the idea of the kids all making First Communion together on one day, in one ceremony, dressed up. My First Communion day was major, as major as my wedding probably will be, and the import of it was made clear for the months of preparation we had before the actual day.
I think a balance absolutely can be struck between the ceremony and the importance of why the kids are there and what they’re doing, and the Church needs to work with the parents to do that.
Kudoes to Sister Angela Jarboe, head of St. Susanna’s Christian Formation Program!!! It is refreshing to read about a nun who is pushing the children in her charge toward more respect for the Sacraments.
We have the same problem as Andrew.
My first communion was and should be a big event. With the focus on the eucharist of course!
